But it was just November: cold wet rain mixed with slushy snow. I could see it was trying, as I went up Islington Avenue on the bus: the wind seemed to bring gusts of snow among the rain. And when I left my friend’s apartment in Little Somalia, there was some half-melted show on the ground. But the water was running in the gutters and the wind was blowing drops off the apartment buildings, and it seems that the attempt has failed.
Maybe it snowed up north in Newmarket where I’m going tomorrow.
I hear you. I live in the Southwest, this has been one of the warmest winters on record, and last month’s gas bill was still $150, which is about 50% more than last January’s bill. I shudder to think what it would be in Massachusetts, even in a warm year.
Saskatoonian here from Canada. This warm weather is freaking out everyone I know. Usually every winter we have one ridiculous, insane, -50 deep freeze where mother nature trys to destroy everyone in the province. Not this year, the closest we got I think was -25 with a mild wind. It has been so mild, one wonders if Global Warming is preventable anymore…
I’m from Saskatchewan as well, though from Regina. And yep, it’s been freakishly warm here too. I’ve shovelled twice this year. There is some snow on the ground, but with the weather consistently hovering around freezing, it’s really more ice than snow. Along with that, we’ve had problems with fog. That is also not normal. We’re one of those places where it’s either a dry cold or a dry heat.
So, I’ve worn glove twice since Christmas, never worn my long winter coat at all, and haven’t plugged my car in once. Apparently January was the warmest on record here. I can well believe it, and predictions are much the same for February. It’s felt like spring here for at least three weeks. It’s very strange but I’m not complaining.
On the one hand, i love proper winter weather, with sub-freezing temperatures and snow and all that good stuff.
On the other hand, gas commodity prices are pretty much double what they were last year, and this weather is saving us from some wallet-busting gas bills.
Forty-five mostly-uphill kilometres north of Toronto, it’s winter in Newmarket. Actual snow on the ground and everything! Here along the lakeshore, though, it’s cold and the roads are dry, with a dusting of snow that blows and skirls along the pavement.
Pity Viktor went back to Caracas on Thursday. He was here for a month on a working holiday, and really wanted to see some snow. We were embarassed to admit that, uh, it seems to be missing.
Actually, I like a weekend snowstorm. I ran all my errands on Friday night. Now I’m just catching up on minor home repairs and cleaning this morning and afternoon. I think that the storm will be over in time for me to shovel out tonight. After that I’ll get warm with hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps (purely for medicinal purposes, of course).
(best read in the old fogey voice)
i remember a few years back when i was in the dorms…i was on the 5th floor of our building and the day before thanksgiving break here in sunny buffalo, it snowed 4 feet overnight. it was the most amazing weather phenomenon i’ve ever seen. the city was shut down, cars were left in their spots for days. it was like a nuclear aftermath of snow proportions. there was a giant, cadillac eldorado that was down the block and the ONLY reason we knew there was a car in that snowbank is because the rear view mirror was barely sticking out. we went and played football in the highway because there was a traffic ban. people were walking dogs and you couldn’t see what they were walking because snow was piled up so high on either side of the sidewalks.
ah…those were the days…
i friggin hate buffalo.
i hate snow.
i want to win the lottery so i never see snow AGAIN!!!
It’s 84, viciously sunny, and no breeze. I’m sitting here in shorts and a tank top, but the fans aren’t cutting it. I may have to break down and turn on the a/c. It’s the middle of ever-lovin’ february!
I want to win the lottery so I can move to the Pacific Northwest and never see that rat bastard sun ever again.
