LOL The franchises are complaining because a lunch order with breakfast items is cheaper. They’d make more money selling that customer a burger and fries.
Thats assuming that customer would order a burger. I’ve often went elsewhere for lunch if I missed McDonalds cutoff time for breakfast. I think they are getting more customers that want a late breakfast.
Consider Dennys and IHop. they do fine serving breakfast all day. They also have demand for their dinner items too.
But in their case, the restaurant is designed for, equipped for and staffed for, all day breakfast.
A typical McDonald’s is much smaller, the staff are not trained short order cooks and the kitchen equipment is not large enough to handle daytime items and leave room for breakfast items.
Jack-In-The Box, one of their competitors, has managed to serve breakfast successfully for several years. A search popped up a reference from 2007.
If McDonald’s wants to turn things around, they need to start offering specials and/or lowering prices. There are mom & pop places around here that offer family meal combos for 4 for less than the price of two Big Mac combos. I get numerous “buy one, get one free” coupons for Carl Jr’s new burger, whatever they are, and other offers in the mail, but not one from McDonald’s unless it’s a grand opening. They just got complacent and now are trying to figure out a solution.
Denny’s is essentially a Diner with a full Kitchen so they can make anything. McDonald’s “Kitchen” are all specialized equipment designed for speed. I think McDonald’s plan was let’s do this and figure out how to make it work later.
I haven’t read the thread because I rarely go to McDonald’s.
That said, I think McDonald’s should go to all-day burgers. I’d rather pull in for the occasional Big Mac or Filet-O-Fish for breakfast, than have ‘breakfast food’.
I’m bumping this, because today was my first day of ordering breakfast after the old cut-off time. I had sausage McMuffins and hashbrowns. The food was good–it doesn’t look like quality has suffered. Nor did I have to wait very long.
However, I talked to the lady who took my order, and asked her how it was doing. I’ve also talked to somebody else at another McDonald’s about this all-day thing. It sounds like most of the rank-and-file employees are not exactly thrilled about having to do breakfast all day long.
I visited McD’s last w/e for breakfast at 2 pm for the first time in years and after looking at all the LARD biscuit selections on the menu board I asked for he only thing I’ll eat there, an egg McMuffin. “No we don’t have them”. I left and went elsewhere and got something else.
