A friend wants me to translate this motto:

Non Carcer sed Paulo minus

I don’t know Latin. Best I can make of it, the meaning would be something like:

Not a prison, but just barely (not a prison), or Not a prison, but not by much

Can someone help?

I think your translation is about right.

It sounds like a high school Latin student’s joke- the idea being “This place (school) isn’t a prison, but it’s close.”

carcer = prison
sed = but
paulo (ablative of “paulus,” which means “a little”) = by a little
minus = less
So, literally, it’s “Not a prison, but (only) a little less (than one).”

*paulo *is an adverb meaning “a little, somewhat”.
