You know Otto, when a large number of fello members have requested- in varying degree of politeness- to cut back on a certain thing you do here that annoy’s many- why not see if you can get along?
I think we can all agree that we want to see that.
This is really funny. I just started watching *Heroes *recently, and so I thought I’d wander into the thread yesterday and see what was going on. I wasn’t daunted by the number of pages (check out one of my *Lost *threads 
), but the nastiness some of the posters bring was very off-putting. I don’t get the same sense from any of the other geeky TV threads (24, BSG, Lost). Guess I’ll just watch the show and stay out of those threads.
The nastiness is usually just a couple different posters sniping back and forth about some stupid thing for far too long, as is currently being demonstrated in this thread.
This time someone spoilered something that looked like speculation bringing on a whole new argument about what to spoiler and if it really is a spoiler and not spec you should cite your source, don’t spoiler spec unless it’s based on an actual spoiler and blah, blah, blah. There’s probably at least a page worth of that crap and that sort of thing keeps happening, it’s always something different each week.
Yes, it is annoying. Hey, I was just joking around about something and I was accused of being unnecessarily sarcastic because nastiness is now the presumed default. Everyone comes to expect smart-assedness so everyone reads and responds to everything that same way. If we can’t be civil in a TV show discussion thread, next civilization will break down, dogs and cats will be living together, end of the world stuff will ensue.*

The nickname brouhaha was just silly because those of us watching and posting from the beginning had not learned the numerous actual names of characters yet (some characters hadn’t even had names revealed to us yet and some names still haven’t been revealed - Haitian guy ring a bell?, btw that’s a nickname which was given us by the show) so it was easier to come up with nicknames and stick with them. At some point it just became a fun little thing to do but it was never taken seriously as in “you must use this nickname!”. Most all of the nicknames were easy to figure out if you watched the show and the longer we watched the show the more we switched over to actual character names.
Sometimes people just like to post crazy or not so crazy theories and that is just having fun. Hijacking these threads to complain about someone’s spoilers, theories, ears, nicknames, etc. is just silly. If you don’t want to risk seeing a spoiler, don’t read spoilers. If you don’t like the way someone posts, uses nicknames, WAGS, or dresses then just ignore their posts!
Oh wait this is the pit … okay then, you’re all poopyheads!
This week’s thread is full of bitter sniping. I don’t really remember it from last week’s.
Still, they are better than those horrible Studio 60 threads where everyone just acts too cool to enjoy the show but they still watch.
I love how every week more and more of those who were gunning for the show to fail are admitting that it really is pretty good television.
The few remaining holdouts are getting more and more desperate in their criticism and are wondering where their pile on went.
If not for the overanalyzing pedants and the “if this show doesn’t turn into what I want I’m quitting and I mean it, damnit” posters, I don’t think there’d be anyone on the BSG threads.
Except for the occasional “I don’t understand what you’re all talking about, I thought this episode was okay” posts. And that’s really not enough to make an entire thread out of.
In the show, they refer to him now as “The Haitian Guy” and therefore if everyone called him that, we’d know that’s who they mean. It’s no use to anyone if one person always refers to him as “Mysterious Earring Guy”.
That describes 95% of every thread about X Television Series online ever and probably closer to 98% for the SDMB in particular.
I adore “Studio 60.” One thing I’ve noticed about the Dope is that, IN MY OPINION, there are a bunch of too cool for school people here who exist to hate everything. I love lots of things, and I suspect I get more enjoyment out of life because I’m, well, enjoying it. But, mileage varying and all that.
The snipers in the threads don’t bug me much, either. I just tune 'em out and read the rest of the thread. Don’t let this place turn you off “Heroes,” Autumn Almanac. It really is a fun show.
My sentiments EXACTLY. Leave the in-jokes and nicknames and snark on TWOP where it belongs. I fucking HATE that site.
What chaps my ass is people giving TWOP more credit than it deserves. They didn’t invent anything. Nicknames? Nope. In-jokes? Nope. Moderators who ban anyone who disagrees with them and call it the “velvet hammer?” Yup. Which is why I hate them too.
At least I can disagree with, and call my moderators assholes if I want to.
OK, the Haitan guy is the ONE character that we don’t know the name of. If you’ve been “watching and posting from the beginning had not learned the numerous actual names of characters yet” then you’re not paying attention.
I seriously wonder if some of the nickname lovers in the Heroes threads are exiles from TWOP. Did I mention that I HATE that site?
