It's Memorial Day! Who's Grilling?

We are. But this is Michigan–it’s state law. Cops cruise the neighborhoods, and if you don’t have your grill set up, fired up, and actually cooking something by 7 pm, you could face fines and/or jail time. Then there’s the added embarassment of coming home from your overnighter in the city pen, and having your neighbors point at you, whispering “Quick, Bertha, get the kids in the house! There’s that guy that didn’t grill on Memorial Day!

We’ve got steaks, corn on the cob, and potatoes. Nothing fancy. I’ll probably nuke some green beans, to add a little color to the plate (grean beans are a little hard to do on a grill). We’ve got an ancient Weber charcoal grill, that works just dandily.

Who else is grilling on this lovely day?
Oh, and I’d like to take a moment to wish a most Happy Memorial Day to my veteran friends and their families. You folks are so very, very appreciated.

Hey Perse! It’s a few hours off as yet, but I’ll be firing up my antique Weber this evening. I think it’s required by law down here in Texas, also.

And a tip o’ the hat to the vets from me as well.

Here’s another Michiganian adhering to the law. Steaks (for us), burgers (for the kids), taters and whatever else will burn nicely. On a Char-Broil Masterflame gas grill.

And a tip of the sun visor to the vets everwhere.

The kids are in the pool, and I am finishing up the homemade bbq sauce even as I type. All of the cholesterol laden meat is ready to be thrown onto a hot grill. Add potato salad, and corn on the cob, and you have an american tradition that cant be beat. Forget about the heart today and indulge in all the saturated fat you can. Tomorrow you can go back to the tofu. Please…no preaching posts from the vegetarians. I respect your choice, but dammit, I love meat. Remember those who served, those who suffered, and those who fell. And if you can somehow manage it, don’t let any vet sit in his nursing home alone today. Go pick him up and bring him over for a dog and some ribs!

We are.

Here I sit at my computer, the salad needs to be made, the patio needs to be swept off, I need to run up to the store for a few more things, everyone is coming over in less than two hours and here I sit at the computer!

Make me log off!

It’s raining today but …

We had nice weather Saturday and Sunday. Barbecued both days, big meal on Saturday, brats and wienies on Sunday. Still got a couple of pork ribs in the fridge if it clears up.

re: Memorial Day – The U.S. Govt. created a new national cemetery very near here. Tahoma National Cemetery. We hadn’t been there before and drove through Saturday at dusk. What a lovely, sad place. The main avenue through the cemetery is aligned so you have a spectacular view of Mt. Rainier, a spectacular mountain.

I just sat down at the 'puter with a bowl of tuna/mayo and some sauteed summer squash. Can I still claim American citizenship? <sigh>

[sup]I won’t even mention how I loathe apple pie…[/sup]

I’m hoping they drive past, see the 2 foot lawn and assume no one lives there…

(kid’s working til 5 pm, SO and I went out to breakfast this am, so he didn’t get to bed til 10 am, so don’t expect to see him rousing himself til much later tonight).

If I can then you can. After 2 beautiful days, it’s raining here, and I’m cleaning my apartment. I put together the new bookshelf, I did all my laundry. I thought about continuing my ongoing fabric wallpaper project, but I have to finish cleaning before I do that. I also have A Baby Story on TLC.

We took extended family out on the boat yesterday, then came home for burgers and dogs on the grill. It’s thundering right now, but we didn’t plan to cook out today anyway. The kid is with her bf, hubby is in front of the TV, and I’m taking a break from the sewing machine to read and post a bit. Anyway, we’re both vets, so we can do whatever we want - so we are.

We grilled yesterday and did a big ole brunch this morning.

(Porkchops and chicken yesterday, eggs and sausage and fruit and coffee cake and… this morning.) So when the cops come our grill has been recently used. hope it fools them.

Jadis-I’m with you.

I don’t like grilled food-except shrimp. I don’t eat red meat so …

Going to have a nice chicken burrito from El Faro’s-great mexican place down the road from me  for dinner-and for lunch tomorrow cuz they’re so huge.

We have and it’s not even memorial day here in England. It’s a bank holiday (a random national holiday we have a few times a year as an excuse for a long weekend) and we’ve been outside with our fire, our meat and our beer. Fire. Meat. Ug.

Fran

Jadis: I guess, but only because you’re eating “summer food.” I’ll let ya slide.

wring: You aren’t just going to jail–you’re going straight to Hades! The single exception to the Michigan Grilling Law is that you may be excused from grilling, if you mow instead. Guess if we don’t hear from you for a few days, we can assume you’re in the hoosegow, eh?

We would’ve, except that it’s raining out. All weekend long…grrr. Oh well, at least I don’t have to work!

I’m working today but I suspect I’ll be grilling out later.

I’d also like to thank our Vets (past, present, and future) for freedoms I enjoy as a US citizen.

Holy shit…they let wimmens near the grill in Michigan?

Here in Iowa…only those with a y-chromosome on board…a frosty golden soda in the left hand…tongs in the right…with a “Kiss The Chef” apron are allowed near the Webers.

Excuse me. Perhaps I wasn’t real clear on that.

“We are,” in my OP, meant that I would do the pre-grill preparation, and my husband would do the actual cooking.

Michigan Law is actually pretty lenient on which gender can run the grill. Persephone’s Law, on the other hand, is not so forgiving. Quite simply, I suck at grilling. Therefore, Mr. Persephone does it. Until he met me, though, he had never grilled, and he was 34 years old. He was in extreme violation of several Michigan statutes at that point, so I had to shape him up a bit. We went to a “bring your own meat” (those are quite popular here) cookout at a friend’s house, and I insisted that Mr. Persephone do the cooking. “You’re a guy–it’s in your DNA. You can do it. Just let yourself become one with the grill.” So, he took a few deep cleansing breaths, summoned up his Inner Carnivore, and commenced grilling. The steaks turned out perfectly. He’s been the Grillmeister ever since.

Thank god the sun started shining today–I think Cranky Jr, Mr. Cranky and I were going to go nuts if we couldn’t get outside. We don’t grill but in order to abide by Michigan state law we went to our friends’ house, where they grilled.

It has not been a stellar Memorial Day weekend (we’ve all got colds, and the weather has been as depressing as it’s been the whole fricking month of May). Today wasn’t so bad. Facing a shorter workweek is also not so bad.

Well, I moseyed on out to the San Jacinto Battleground and reabsorbed what they tried to get us to remember in Texas grade school. I’d forgotten how pivotal that battle was in the course of events leading to the U.S. acquiring about a third of the lower 48.

Then a hop, skip and a jump over to the Battleship Texas and the U.S.S. Seawolf Memorial. It seemed like a Memorial Day kind of thing to do. I was surprised at the crowd - I had to circle the parking facilities several times to get a spot. Lots of families picnicing, young couplles strolling, slightly older couples herding skateboarders, me and possibly the only other person who was there by himself. An elderly gent (80s at least) arrived just ahead of me and climbed up the hill to look at the battleship. As I was leaving I noticed he was still standing there, contemplating the ship. I’ll bet you a buck he’s a navy vet.

Came upon a horrendous wreck on the way home. Damn.

But now 'tis the hour. Got a Foster’s in a frosted mug, some fine and dandy cow shrapnel and I just lit the fire. I haven’t used self lighting charcoals in a bit and I’d forgotten how ferociously they devote themselves to the task - look’s like I’ll be grilling sooner than I thought.

I hope you all (do you understand how hard it is for this Texas boy to type “you” and “all” as two words?) enjoyed your Memorial Day, folks!
