It's not Istanbul it is Constantinople

Geek. But then, huge eyeballs scare me.

If the Residents are cool and TMBG are geeky, then I must surely be something scarier and more loathesome than either, because the first time I ever heard that song it was being performed by Sha Na Na, and that’s who I associate it with.

::shudder::

I’m sorry, but if you think of TMBG or the Replacements, you show your lack of musical knowledge. The song was a hit in 1953 by the Four Lads. Connecting it with TMBG is like thinking of Madonna when you hear the song title “American Pie.”

Well, not that bad. :slight_smile: But I knew the song long before either group covered it.

them’s fightin’ words!

What about the ones like me who think of Bette Midler?

And the thread title made me think:

Here I come, Constantinople,
Here I come, Constantinople,
Watch out, Constantinople,
Here I come…

That’s from sometime in the late '70s for me, as if time does matter.

Sorry, but TMBG= Geek, and Residents=PRETENTIOUS Geek. I mean, who admits that in public? That’s like wearing a Brian Eno t-shirt to the first day of classes in hopes of impressing someone, or playing the tablas in the dorm stairwell for attention. Or laughing at people who say they like Dali, because he’s a merchandising hack, unlike that God, Julian Schnabel.
heh. Just joshin’ ya.

I’m a Geek Majordomo. Not only did I immediately think TMBG upon seeing the thread title, but I also immediately brought up the Mp3 folder and started playing it.

Plus, I’ve been known to sing the whole damn song through, over and over and over and over and over…

Geek. I knew it was a cover, but I couldn’t have told you of who.

Hey, I didn’t think of either, but don’t go a-shootin’ just yet. I thought of “Hop on Pop” by Dr. Seuss; surely that’s forgivable. “Constantinople” was the longest word I knew at age four.

Gotta admit I’m with Juanita. I think of the city, and only recently have I associated TMBG with They May Be Giants. Residents I tend to think of people who live somewhere. Never heard of the group until I opened the thread.

::raises hand::

Gloria? Gloria from Track 13? Is that you? Man, there are LEGIONS of people who want a word or two with you! :smiley:

Geek, got it off napster and put it on a CD. My first experience with it was I heard it on Tiny Toons when I was about 10. Funny stuff.

I mentioned in #SDchat the other night that me beloved Mamma O remembers the original song from the same time period as Chuck there.

So what’s with the old-fogeyism there, Chuck? You’re a science-fiction writer, aren’t you? You shouldn’t be looking back; you should be looking forward, with all the excitement and wonder at progress that entails. Or have you been reading too much Jack Finney again? :wink:

Well, the first thing i thought of was the Residents song. I don’t think that makes me cool though. I think it makes me at least as much a geek as the TMBGers.

??? I don’t get it?
