It's Official - "Saving Jesssica Lynch"

You’re right. The dumbass that started the thread and put in the politically charged comment for no good reason should have started a seperate thread to debate the war.

Can the American soldiers defeat Iraqi doctor’s Real Ultimate Power?

Really? Wow. If he’s a main character, they’ll have to get Brad Pitt to play him or something. (Brad Pitt doesn’t look the least bit middle eastern, but that’s never stopped Hollywood before.)

OK, so they’re making a movie out of it. My question is one of ettiquette: should I stand to attention and salute before or after the film? Or both?

Oh, I see. This is just all just a response to your sorry tantrum in the other thread (referenced by rjung above). Well, then, I’ll have to correct your assertion that you were shouted down in that thread; both a moderator and an administrator warned you to “drop it.” That’s not being shouted down.

Secondly, I’m sure you can see the difference between a political comment related to the discussion at hand - i.e why the OP is not looking forward to the movie - and an aggresive political comment that had nothing to do with the subject discussed - i.e your opinion of the character of those who share the OPs beliefs.

And, Rikwriter, should I have made any typos in the above post, don’t bother to correct me. I’m sure I can get by without you playing spellcheck (though it does seem to form the basis of any argument you may have).

Nope, there is no difference. If someone inserts a political argument into a thread, they are opening it up for political debate. Period. You may wish to try to sooth your conscience and convince yourself you’re not a hypocrite by such specious arguments, but they are nothing but rationalization.

They could certainly pad it with an extensive panorama of the West VA countryside, with Rather intoning the words “Take me home. Country road. Take me home. Take me home” for about half an hour. A few scenes with Jessica explaining to her boyfriend (played by Ashton Kutcher, wearing his trucker hat) how she is torn between her love for him, and her duty to liberate the Iraqi people from tyranny.

After her valiant ass-kicking fight against the Fedayeen Ninjas, she’ll be interrogated by Udai Hussein, played by Gary Oldman (he’s good at the evil guy roles). When his relentless mocking of democracy fails to break her down, he throws her into a dungeon/mental hospital.

I’m not sure how they should do the rest of the film, but I agree with msmith537’s recommendation that Tony Shalhoub should play the lawyer (or sympathetic orderly, or whatever role it should be changed to). And the rescue certainly should feature a big shoot-out between the Marines and yet more Fedayeen ninjas.

Also, Tommy Lee Jones could play Donald Rumsfeld’s role.

Ok, for starters, I began this thread saying I did not approve of ther making of this film because A) Lynch herself wants nothing to do with it, B) The kid is a soldier to our nation and was just doing her job and now she has been made into an object for media rating, and C) When I said “questionable”, I doubt anyone really misunderstood what I meant. The facts surrounding what happened to Lynch and her company have not been made clear, in any of the versions we’ve heard. Added to the fact that the reasons for the war have not been properly explained [weapons of mass destruction must be taken away from a dangerous country? evil dictator is a threat to peace and we must finally get rid of him? President Bush really needed to do something big for the history books?] and yes, I would qualify both situations as “questionable,” as to either intent or in their factual re-telling.

And this:

Was extremely uncalled for.

Actually you’re wrong. If I called you a fucking asshole I wouldn’t be opening it up for a slagging match I’d be opening it up for a Mod to warn me and for you to start a thread about the incident in the right place. If you continued the slagging match here we would be both warned. This isn’t the place for debates about the rights or wrongs of war.

Go argue this in GD or the Pit.

But the person calling ME a dumbass was totally appropriate, right? And you don’t see why I think that’s hypocritical? Unbelievable.

This is ridiculous. Cafe Society is a forum for discussion of the arts. Since the arts so often dwell on the political, it is impossible at times to comment on art without including political comment. This can be seen in the OP; the poster expressed reservations toward a movie that has a subject that is in part political. The OP’s reasons for “not looking forward” to the movie related partly to its political nature. Hence, the political comments were reasonable for this forum.

Your comments, however, had nothing to do with the movie discussed here, were not related to general conversation and were unreasonably aggressive. They were better suited to Great Debates or the Pit.

No, your example was wrong as are you. If someone makes a political statement in a post that is otherwise non-political, they are inviting someone to post a statement rebutting it. As I did.
If the mods wish to warn EITHER of us (and if they warn me, they should certainly warn the original poster) that’s their business. However, given the position they recently took wrt other threads, it would be almost as hypocritical as the criticism I have taken here.

No, you’re simply yet again trying to rationalize your own hypocricy. The original poster could have simply said “It’s not appropriate to make this film because the facts are not all out about the circumstances of Jessica Lynch’s capture and captivity.” I wouldn’t have argued with that, and there would have been nothing politically charged or inappropriate about it.
Instead, he threw in a TOTALLY UNECESSARY comment about the war. He could very ably have made his point about the movie without commenting on the politics of the war, but he chose to do so. I chose to answer.
You chose to attack me for answering because you disagree with me politically. No other reason. It’s as clear as glass. Don’t think you can disguise your motivations through your pitiful sophistry.

RikWriter, several times you have accused me of unnecessarily putting a, what must seem to you, grieviously slanderous political statement that leaves both myself and this thread open to political debate.

When others ask you calm down anj just discuss the movie, as I had intended with the thread, you accuse them of hypocracy because they obviously aren’t up to a political debate with you.

You insult me, calling me a dumbass for making a comment related to politics when it is only in reference to the film of which I had hoped to talk about.

When I said your insult was uncalled for, you call me a hypocrite because somebody totally fucking else called you one. If you are going to start playing kiddy games with someone else, I don’t care, but there is no reason to continue insulting me when I have said nothing against you.

He could have said that, if he’d wanted to, but it seems that wasn’t his opinion on the film at all (Gorgon Heap, feel free to correct me if Rikwriter has accurately summated your viewpoint). However, it’s nice of you to let us know what opinions we can and can’t hold. Perhaps you should contact a mod and ask for a sticky put up the top of the forum letting us know exactly what you consider reasonable to post.

I didn’t attack you. I attempted to show you the difference between reasonable political comment and throwing a tantrum.

This is the key quote, RikWriter. The OP made a comment on the war that you found unnecessary. But did you comment on that position? No, you decided to make a sideswipe at the character of someone holding that position (implicitly, Gorgon Heap). If the comment in the OP was irrelevant, you could have said so. But you went one step further and made a personal attack.

That is the difference, and your inability or unwillingness to recognize that speaks poorly for you, I think. Was MSmith out of line by calling you a dumbass? Absolutely. It was uncalled for here in CS. But did you have to call Gorgon Heap a dumbass? No. So that’s two personal attacks you’ve made, and you’re the one to take the first genuine swing.

Give it a rest.

Thank you, Archive Guy and gex gex. I opened this thread to discuss the TV movie they are working on and the fact that they will likely louse it up and/or glaze sover a lot of information because nobody seems to know the reality of it.

I also believe Lynch, who suffered one way or another and really does deserve praise, should now be left alone since she has already been thanked properly. She’s just a kid and she deserves better treatment my the media.

Wow, making the same joke i referenced in my post, yet refrained from doing because it was beneath me. How clever of you!

(BTW, you misspelled Rick in your user name!)

I wasn’t attempting to insult you, I was trying to point out to the person who had used the insult against me that he was being hypocritical.

My, how disingenuous of you. I was showing you what a NON-politically charged comment would have been since you said it was impossible to comment on the situation without making a political comment. I proved you wrong, easily, and of course you are trying to change the subject.
