One of our managers did that a few years ago, using an old bridesmaid’s dress. I’m sad to say it was mid-afternoon before I realized the “Devil in a Blue Dress” connection.
I was getting a bit depressed about my selection of a pirate costume (since everyone will be doing that this year), but I like this idea. I may have to borrow it. If nothing else, it gives me a use for all of those AOL disks.
I just had a flash of inspiration! I’ll don a floppy blue hat, a grey cape, a grey beard, and an eypatch. I’ll carry a long staff or spear, and see if I can find two ravens to put on my shoulders. I wonder… how many would recognize Odin and how many would confuse me with a wizard?
Well, I’d recognize you! I admire Odin greatly, and seriously considered that costume the year after I lost the vision in one eye.
The most I’m likely to do this year is the same as I’ve done before: a T-shirt I have that’s far too orange to wear any other way, with a jack-o-lantern drawn on the front.
I like the devil in a blue dress idea. I started this thread thinking I knew what my costume would be, and I’ve changed my mind about five times since then. Too many good ideas.
Hmm. I’m sure there will be a lot of pirates out this year, but as this year it has a special significance for me, having a short time ago discovered my link to Grace O’Malley, I have an itch to dress up as one. Not as a lady pirate, though, I want a full get-up like the male pirates get! The big, cool jacket and big, big boots! I’ve been a pirate before, but I want to go all out this year.
Best costumes so far have been a prince (white tights, fruity hat, pouffy sleeves and all), Alex DeLarge (I assembled that one by myself, took forever… also, canes cost more than I had originally thought), an aviatrix… I’ve also been a cat a few times. Meh. The best ones pretty much always end up with me cross-dressing.
Since I’ll probably be working on Halloween, I don’t know yet how much we’re allowed to go all out. It’s an awfully fun and laid-back kind of store, though, so I’ll likely be able to get away with just about anything. Considering nobody raised an eyebrow when I waltzed in with blue hair… in the middle of August. Still. If I’m asked to keep it conservative, I might just wear my husband’s (souvenir gift from family member’s trip to Denver) John Elway jersey. I mean, really, what could be more scary here in Seattle than John freakin’ Elway?
I’m going as Mario, my roommate’s going as Luigi, and I’m hoping my wife will go as Princess Toadstool. Plus, she’s pregneant right now, so I’m going to paint a toadstool hat on the belly of a tee shirt and have her wear that if nothing else works.
However, last night at dinner, my son taught her to squinch up one eye and say “Aaaaarrrrrr” and it’s the cutest damn thing I’ve ever seen (today) and so she absolutely *must *be a pirate, POTC clones notwithstanding.
I think, however, that I’ll steal the Software Pirate idea for myself. We’ll be matched, yet not, which is exactly what I’m looking for.
Last year, I was a cereal killer. I pinned small cereal boxes to a shirt, stuck knives in them (plastic knives), and put fake blood around the “wounds”. I won five dollars in a contest at work.
Usually I’m one of the few people in my office who gets really excited about Halloween. Not this year. Yesterday one of my coworkers told me that he may need my help with his costume. He said it’s something he’s wanted to do for years, but he never had enough time to make it and wasn’t sure where to get the materials. Unfortunately he won’t tell me what it is – he wants it to be a surprise.
When I was shopping for patterns for my costume, I found an adorable pirate costume for infants/toddlers that includes a stroller decoration. Go to the Simplicity Web site and type in “4021” for the design number (click on the thumbnail of the Pea Pod baby to see the pirate costume).
I’m determined to dress up this year. I am looking for clever puns…
