In three weeks (August 23) it will be half a century since I first appeared on this planet. Last year, when I realized that the Big Day would be on a Friday, I started trying to think of an appropriate way to spend the evening. Various things sidetracked my planning attempts until last February, when my wife & I were discussing possible dates for our annual pilgrimage to Las Vegas. We usually go in spring when the weather there is relatively tolerable, but financial and other considerations made that impossible this year. Then I had the idea of combining the Vegas trip with my birthday celebration.
Now I know late August is not exactly the best time to be in Vegas – our very first trip was a split week around Labor Day – but I don’t expect to spend a lot of time walking up and down the Strip this time. We’ve got a room booked at the Gold Coast, and tickets to see Penn & Teller at the Rio next door. In past trips we’ve stayed on the Strip and downtown, but this time we’ll most likely be spending all our time at the Gold Coast, Rio and Palms. I’ve already checked my usual sources for what’s happening that week, and have a few other ideas for things to do. A lot of that depends on how my wife is feeling (she’s recovering from a broken arm in addition to her other health problems), but as far as gambling goes she’s strictly a nickel slots player, so she’s happy anywhere that has them.
Anyway, I just thought I’d share something Mundane & Pointless with my fellow Dopers.
