I was only joking.
Odd what society values, though. Plumbers et al make way less than say, ad execs. I find it odd. Not wrong, just a bit weird…
I can NOT stop laughing at that McCain/Obama picture! I’ve been bursting into random gales of laughter all night. Seriously, that’s just about the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.
I was reflecting upon that, computer guy vs. cleaning guy or plumber.
The former is more difficult for family, the others easier.
Og, tell me about it! My sides ache, and my kids keep bitching because I am randomly bursting out into hysterics. It’s been a rough day, so I made it my new desktop pic, and it’s helping immeasurably.
I know, count me in the crowd that thinks that is one of the most inspired jokes ever. I’m going to grin all day.
I learn so much from this board. I had no idea there was a word for how I read Obama’s response. But yes, I agree it had a “litotes-like” feel to it. His response actually gave me a chuckle as I imagined what his was really thinking about Palin. LOL
And I probably recognized that tactic because I’ve had to use it myself quite a few times. It keeps me out of some sticky situations while also allowing me to honor my internal integrity. Then later, if someone challenges Obama with, “but even you said Palin would make a good VP” he could in all honestly come back with, “No way, I said no such thing.”
And while some would like to see Obama go more on a direct attack, I really prefer that he doesn’t go that route. I like that he tends to opt out of some of the nastiest fights. Besides that style also fits very well with his “unity” stance.
Someone needs to make an LOLcats of this
No lolcat but I did come across this gif.
See post 554.
I realize that I’m way late to discuss actual content, but I didn’t get to watch the debate, so I read the transcript yesterday. I’m sure it presented differently spoken, but on paper, McCain comes off as spouting gibberish at least as often as Palin does. His remarks are alarmingly incoherent. There’s a whole lot of BlahblahblahJoeblahblahblahEloquentblahblahblahOMGTAXES!!! going on there.
Funny but not his reaction to ZERO!!!
Well they showed the debate in the UK late last night and i managed 2/3rds of it before retiring.
I was trying to view the debate with a neutral hat on as i had never seen either of these two speak outside of soundbites.
I have a couple of observations:
-
Obama came across as calm and collected although he did seem to be looking down a lot at certain points which made him look a bit unsure / shifty. I had thought he was looking at his notes but there didnt seem to be any preperpared facts written on his pad.
-
McCain came across as just plain odd. I think he actually gives me the creeps ! Whats with all the inane grinning ??
-
All the talk to Joe Plumber stuff was vaccuous, irritating and condecending.
-
The look of suprise on McCains face when the zero tax retort came back, was telling. How can a senior and experienced politicain do that ? Standard response would have been smile, shake head and move on quickly.
-
My gf came in and after 1 min said she liked his ( Obama’s ) soothing voice. She has to switch over when Bush comes on.
-
McCain had 3 wanky little points to get across ( spread the wealth, Joe wil be worse off etc ) and just repeated them over and over.
-
Debates like this are great. I wish our politicains had the balls to do it here.
After the last debate, he was criticized for not smiling at all. Someone told him to SMILE!!!, and the best he could muster was that Crypt Keeper grimace.
Try saying that after a couple of pints !
Last night a few pundits on both CNN and MSNBC were talking about how John McCain’s body language was viewed by independent voters. The only thing they all agreed on was that they (the pundits) didn’t notice anything strange or off-putting and were surprised at how bad he (McCain) came off.
To paraphrase one pundit, “We see him every day and we’re used to him. He’s an intense man and, after a while, you get used to it. When viewed with fresh eyes, his intensity does come off as anger.”
Apparently the blinking, the grimacing, the eye-rolling and the lip-licking are McCain’s every day body language.

Dave: Soul, Bill. The eyes are the windows to the soul.
Bill: For those who have one.

(This link may work directly only today (10/17); if it’s after the 17th you will probably have to search for today’s cartoon.)
