It's things like this that leave one mistrustful of the cops (RO)

Well, it seems that everyone’s favorite former Dearborn, MI cop is going to be facing charges.

Misdemeanor charges, but charges. :dubious:

And the PD is still refusing to talk about thier handling of this case.

It might be low on the list, but i prefer a zero tolerance rule to things like this. He was a cop for petes sake! If that is to mean anything he has to maintain the standard set for police officers.

If not, then fuck it. If cops get to above the law the law means nothing. Is that the kind of society you’d want? i don’t care if the police department burns the pot, feeds it to jamaican donkeys or makes brownies for amsterdam red light workers with it, cops can’t help themselves to confiscated drugs. It is just as bad as keeping bank robbery money.

I’m a bit confused. Where is the Blue Wall of Silence? After all, the dude did get caught and an investigation appears to have been conducted.

Monty, you did see, perhaps, the earlier comments in the thread that indicated that the original plan of the Dearborn PD was to dismiss Sanchez without filing any charges? That the linked update story mentions that these misdemeanor charges are being filled after national attention was called to the case? That, and the fact that the PD still refuses to talk about the case don’t imply an open and public process to me.

Here’s a link to a version of the story from 5-10-07.

Please note this line from that story: “Former Cpl. Edward Sanchez resigned after the incident last year and the department made the decision on Wednesday not to prosecute him.”
The same story mentions that Sanchez’ wife took cocaine from his cruiser, too, for a private binge.

Now, I’ll grant that the evidence might not be there for charges beyond the misdemeanor level, though I find that hard to believe given we’re talking about a cop misappropriating confiscated drugs for personal use, but making the original decision to release him without filing any charges looks pretty damned shitty.

For that matter, the continued silence after this mess blew up in his face looks worse. How fucking hard is it to say that “Our original review of the evidence didn’t seem strong enough to bring to a conviction”? It would be fucking weaseling, but it would be something.

…These doses would be comparable to a 154-pound human smoking at one time almost three pounds (1.28 kg) of 1%-marihuana or 250,000 times the usual smoked dose and over a million times the minimal effective dose assuming 50% destruction of the THC by smoking. … [/.quote]

I know some people people who would view that paragraph as a challenge to be met .
