You remember Operation Babylon, where Israel destroyed Saddam’s nuclear reactor amid concerns of a nuclear weapons program? Whether justified or not, Israel has been none the worse as a result.
Now, with the evidence that Iran, is definitely developing a nuclear weapon as well as a delivery platform to Israel and with the repeated stated call for the destruction of Israel, Israel must do what it did before.
Eliminate the nuclear threat with massive conventional airstrikes.
I remember the October missile crisis so ably handled by President Kennedy. There was no question but that the nuclear missile launchers would not be allowed to assemble. Thankfully Kennedy stood his ground. The east coast breathed a sigh of relief.
I wish there were a way for Israel to coerce Iran into abandoning their program. Sanctions are a joke. I wish America would simply blockade all sea trade immediately but they aren’t even talking blockade.
Nope, Israel is on its own. It must do what it can to maintain its safety indeed their very existence .
I know this post will brand me an idiot . What do you suggest Israel do ?
Just as Babylon was an ancient capital of Mesopotamia/Iraq, Susa was an ancient capital of Persia/Iran
It can’t. Iran prepared against exactly that sort of attack; short of using nukes itself or getting America to attack Iran there’s nothing it can do. Even America’s ability to stop the Iranians short of using nukes or a ground invasion is questionable.
And why should anyone think that Iran getting nukes will threaten Israel? Iran isn’t going to use them, that would lead to their destruction. If anything Iran having nukes will be an improvement for the region; encouraging Israel and especially American to stop acting like thugs. Maybe next time the Iranians try to extend an olive branch America will try to make peace instead of raving about “the Axis of Evil”.
While I think that Israel is simply going to have to get used to a nuclear Iran and simply hope that Iran doesn’t decide to either launch a nuke at Israel or have one detonated by Hamas terrorists in such a way as to finish the job Hitler started, one would have to be extremely ignorant to not understand why Jews would be terrified of a country that took it’s name to curry favor with Hitler and who’s leadership sponsors conferences claiming the Holocaust was a hoax, presents the Protocols of the Elders of Zion as historical truth, and who’s leaders have called for an extermination of the Jewish state.
Your own nonchalance over a regime that executes apostates and gays while persecuting some religious minorities and discriminating against others strikes me as extremely odd for someone who regularly spouts off bigoted, paranoid rants about Christians and who insists that rich white atheists have to be terrified of being rounded up and executed by the government.
I agree with your second paragraph but not the first.
Under what legal construct does Israel have the right to commit acts of war against another sovereign nation without any military provocation? If Israel has a right to drop bombs on Iran for attempting to create nukes, does Iran have the right to drop even more bombs on Israel for actually having them (or for ignoring UN resolutions for inspections - the very same action the US claimed warranted their invasion of Iraq)?
Who cares? International law is only as good as the force you or your allies have to back it up. Do you really think anyone would lift a finger to do anything more than tsk-tsk at Israel if they extensively bombed Iran’s nuclear program?
If Israel responds to rhetoric with aggression and impunity and not diplomacy and patience when it is not militarily provoked, then why should anyone care when they are attacked?
Because it’s always been called that or some variation thereof? Because Persia is a Greek term for the Achemaiad Empire and is inaccurate, as it describes just one erstwhile province. It’s a bit like insisting that the UK be called Wessex.
The Iranians, maybe? If Iran is an impotent country, there’s no point in being afraid of it. If Iran is not impotent, then it would be justified to be afraid of what Iran might do if bombs were dropped on Iran.
Of course the reason we don’t blockade Iran is because, duh, Iranian oil is headed for the world market. If we don’t want that oil, then we can start blockading them.
The Shah specifically chose to change the name of his country and also chose to call himself “Light of the Aryans” to curry favor with Hitler.
Nevertheless, I prefer to call myself an Iranian and don’t want Iran to go back to being “Persia” because not all Iranians are Persians. In fact, around 40% aren’t, though you wouldn’t know it by Iranians in the West.
Even to whatever extent your accusations against them are true, Iran isn’t going to launch any nukes because that would be suicidal. Nor are they going to hand nukes over to Hamas, that’s ridiculous. Nations don’t hand weapons like that over to guerrillas/terrorists; America hasn’t, the USSR didn’t, no one does. And even if they did Israel would still nuke Iran, and they know it.
From the standpoint of personal danger, the Christians are here; Iran is way over there. The Christians are far, far more dangerous to me than the Iranians will ever be. And I’ve never said that I approve of the Iranian government; just that I don’t think they are suicidal lunatics, and I don’t think we have the right to mass murder the people of Iran. Especially since our real quarrel with them is that they dared overthrow our puppet the Shah and haven’t sucked up to us since.
