iTunes Album Artwork

I can be pretty bloody lazy when it comes to tools. For example, I load stuff onto iTunes and I listen to it. I haven’t really played with the bells and whistles. But today I decided I’d enable Album Artwork and get the artwork for the six days, 19+ hours of stuff in the library. Okay, that’s cool. Nice to not have that empty box in the corner.

And then I discovered the Cover Flow display. Darned if that’s not neato-mosquito, seeing covers I haven’t looked at in ages. I just wish there were artwork for all of my albums.

Okay, so I’m slow. But I still think it’s pretty nifty.

And I have a question…

I have The Forbidden Zone soundtrack. Felix Figueroa’s Pico And Sepulveda was left off of the album, so I got it off of the DVD. How can I make it use the Album Artwork from album?

There’s software like TuneSleeve and iTuner which is pretty good about grabbing missing artwork from the web for iTunes.

It’s especially lame though that you HAVE to enter your credit card info just to download the covers. It isn’t enough to simply register for an itunes store account.

Edit: I might be misunderstanding your question, but iTunes doesn’t seem to care what the track title is, just the artist and matching album title. For compilations and sountracks, you can put the actual artist under “Artist,” and something like “Various Artists” or “Oingo Boingo” under “Album Artist.” It won’t change the sort order or displayed artist.

I googled iTuner, but I’m not sure which of the links is for downloading artwork. I’m pretty sure it’s not the one for tuning cars. I tried to download TuneSleeve but the download (.msi file) couldn’t be opened.

I put Felix Figueroa under ‘Artist’, The Mystic Knights Of The Oingo Boingo under ‘Album Artist’, and Forbidden Zone under ‘Album’ I’d hoped iTunes would figure out that the Album Artwork it had for the album should go there as well. No joy.

If you were really bored you could go find a picture of the album from somewhere and drag into the display box. I did that for some of mine before - might take a bit longer for 6 days worth of music though!

Or I could scan the covers and upload them. There were 70 album covers that couldn’t be found. It seems a bit random. Wall Of Voodoo Index Masters was found, but not Call Of The West. And some of the covers are wrong. For example I’ve got an Alice Cooper/Rob Zombie track from The X-Files: Songs In The Key Of X that shows a Cheryl Crow cover, and the Big Bad Voodoo Daddy cover isn’t the same as the CD I have. Weird.

Oh, well. If it were that important to me I’d have gotten the album artwork a couple of years ago. Still, it would be nice to know how to link that one Forbidden Zone song to the rest of the CD.

And Cover Flow is still nice.

Select a song from the album that has the proper artwork. Right-click and select “Get Info”. You should have a dialog box with a series of tabs across the top, the last of which is “Artwork”. Select the album cover and copy, then go through the same process for the incorrectly-labeled song and paste the image.

For the missing album covers, I’ve found Amazon to be a pretty good source, or simply doing a Google image search for the album name.

I thought of that, only there’s no Copy option. :frowning:

Ctrl-C?

Aha! I was trying to ‘right click’ (crtl-click on a Mac) and nothing happened. I was able to crtl-C, paste into Word, save it as a .jpg, and Add it to the Get Info.

I’ve been using another mp3 editor to attach covers. At first I wasn’t going to but the empty space bothered me. Still got tons more to do though.

The cover display view is useless for me: many of the albums I have on iTunes don’t have covers in the database, and others display the wrong cover. In addition, many have covers from different versions of the music, not the ones I’m used to. I use it occasionally, but using it to find a CD is a complete waste of computing.

I use Wikipedia and Amazon to find the covers I want. Although for those I often have to edit and resize them.

Still it has been a lot of work.

Although really I just like to see the covers when the songs play.

You shouldn’t have to involve Word at all. Copying it should put it on your clipboard and you should be able to paste it directly onto another track. You can add other non-album pics as well. I have a few candid artist shots pasted in as “album” art for tracks that didn’t have artwork attached.

iTuner’s been abandoned, it seems. It also doesn’t handle artwork like I thought. I could swear that several such programs were mentioned on one of Leo Lapotre’s many podcasts, but in checking MBW Picks and MBW Picks of the Week sites, I’m not having much luck in coming up with anything.

I found most of the album art with google images. The resolution on most of them are not great, since people seem to like to display them at 200 pixels or less and iTunes is bigger than that. I couldn’t find the right Madness cover, since it’s not an easy thing to search. Amazingly I’ve just found Myshkin Impossible’s Dr. Plauge And Other Lullabyes. Couldn’t find it last night. Again, it’s small; but whaddya gonna do? No luck finding the Mermaid Lounge cover I need, nor some of the Classical ones.

Johnny, I don’t know whether it’s too late for you, but I’ve had great success finding hi-res cover art using Album Art Downloader. Currently, it contains scripts to search up to 28 different web sources for album and artist art.

That looks like an interesting tool. But it says it runs on Windows XP, and I’m running OS X.
