Hi all,
I keep my music stored on an external drive accessed via iTunes.
Because I recently reinstalled my OS, I had to re-load all my music into a newly-installed iTunes.
Upon doing this, I was surprised to learn that several songs were loaded twice. I investigated and found that I somehow managed to have many duplicate songs loaded on the external drive.
I have around 10,000 tunes. My iTunes now contains 14,000 (which obviously means I have 4000 dupes).
Is there an easy way to fix this? I’m not thrilled with the prospect of manually deleting 4,000 files.
Thanks!

On a Mac and in iTunes: File> Display Duplicates
This will give a listing of all of the potential candidates that are believed to be the same thing. Although, I am not sure that this will solve your problem. When songs are loaded into iTunes twice, are the files themselves duplicated or is it just the link in the iTunes program that is doubled?
The files themselves are duplicated.
I did the “find duplicates” maneuver; I even discovered the “find exact duplicates” trick (hold down the shift key). Didn’t help me much, though.
Anyway, all is well. I ended up deleting the dupes manually.
Thanks for the input.
