Does anyone have any ideas about what my problem is? I ALWAYS get this error when connecting to the Music Store:
“iTunes could not connect to the Music Store. The network connection was refused. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, then try again.”
I have been able to get through once while using my SBC/Yahoo router/gateway/modem, but only once. I have forwarded the supposed iTunes ports to the program itself.
I’ve looked through the iTunes help pages and sent them my specifics, but they have reneged on their promise to promptly address my issue.
This is not particularly helpful - but I get the same error about every 3rd time I start up iTunes. I usually just shut it down and restart and get right through - I chalk it up to a problem with their servers.
I’m not sure what you mean by this part. I looked at iTunes on my Windows XP PC and couldn’t find any ports that need to be configured. Or is this on an Apple computer? More details might help.
Beware of a potential firewall/internet security issue. Sometimes the security will play nice with programs, but then will sudden prevent connectivity for those same programs. Might want to try disabilng anything that you may have, and then attempt a connection.
Also beware of the Windows Firewall that comes with Service Pack 2, assuming you have Windows. You should also be aware that sometimes firewalls will keep “protecting” even after turned off. May require a restart.

When you launch iTunes, there’s a whole crap load of tiny “web objects” that launch and try to run. I found that by putting all the above URLs in my Whitelist eventually opened the iTunes store to everyone behind the FW.
I hope I’m using the right term with “forwarding ports”. I found a list of ports used by iTunes on Apple’s help page. I got into my router/firewall’s settings and assigned or forwarded those ports to iTunes, as far as I and SBC/Yahoo’s help people understand it.
I keep hearing that I need to allow those Apple domains, but I don’t know how, and the help desk doesn’t seem to either. Besides, I checked the DMZ button in the firewall settings, and that didn’t help. Doesn’t that mean that the firewall isn’t the problem?
I’m using the 2Wire gateway/modem/router that SBC supplied. Apple’s site is out of ideas, and their help desk wants to charge me $50. I’m starting to think of uninstalling and reinstalling the program itself, even though I just upgraded it.
Please stop. Putting your machine in to a DMZ presents an unacceptible risk. It’s obvious that you’re not familiar with router settings; while I don’t have any answers for you, I can tell you that the best thing to do is stop playing around with your security settings until someone comes around with a better answer for you.
I only put the DMZ on for about one minute to see if anything changed, and it didn’t. The firewall is back on. My point was that if I can’t connect with the DMZ on, the problem apparently isn’t the firewall at all.
