back a million years ago when I first got iTunes, I batch loaded a bunch of random songs from my computer into my library. Lots of them had incomplete or incorrect information.
Having a slow Saturday with nothing but laundry to do, I started going through some of those titles and filling in the missing parts - albums, titles, all that jazz.
I’m using iTunes circa release 10.1ish, on a regular Windows 7 machine btw.
Here’s my question. When you go under “Get Info” for an individual file, there’s a nice little pop-up with the tabs Summary, Info, Video, Sorting, and Options there.
Going under Info usually shows a nice set of text-boxes (either with text or not) which can be edited by simply clicking in them. That’s working for most of my files.
However, I’m hitting a decent number of files where the Info screen has the information listed all greyed-out and unselectable. When I click on the titles, they play, so I’m assuming that iTunes is finding them…
Why can’t I alter the info (often wrong or missing) in those particular files?
How do I fix things so that I CAN alter/input that info?
What do I need to do to prevent this happening again after I sort out all of the current files?
The individual file locations are noted at the bottom of your summary tab – see if the uneditable files have something in common. Maybe you have files with attributes set to “read only”? or a portion of your drive that you can’t write on? Actually, I’m not even sure this would make a difference, because iTunes doesn’t necessarily write all the information to the individual files. There are some file types which have no means of holding it anyway.
Also, if it’s not already showing, add the “kind” column to your music list, and see if the uneditable files are all of the same type.
I have never seen this problem. FYI, the files types I have are: AAC. MPEG, Purchased AAC, and WAV.
