I've chosen my university subjects for this year

I’ve just completed my enrolment for 2005. I’ve decided to do five subjects. In the first semester I’m going to do *Remedies * and Taxation Law. In the second semester I’ll be doing Trust Law, *Corporations Law * and Legal Ethics. I think it will prove a fairly challenging year.

Is that Law School? How does it work down there?

At the university I’ll be going to next year, freshmen don’t choose their classes until orientation, a week before classes start.

Yes, I’m doing a law degree part-time. I’m just about to start fourth year. The 2005 academic year commences on 28 February.

Re-enrolling students choose their classes about 6 weeks before the start of the new academic year. First year students usually enrol later, about 3 weeks before the start of classes.

First semester ends on 10 June. Then we have mid-year exams. Second semester runs from 1 August to 11 November, followed by the end of year exams.

Can’t you do some Arts subjects just to liven things up a little? Your choice for this year sounds horridly boring, I must say.

**kambuckta ** - I’m doing a straight law degree, not a combined one. All of the credit points have to come from law subjects. I agree, it might be nice to do some arts subjects to leaven the mix, but **not ** if they don’t count. Anyway, all of the law subjects I’ve done so far have been interesting and I expect this year’s to be the same. Two of them (*Taxation Law * and Trust Law) are electives and I’ve chosen them because I have a particular work-related interest in those fields.

I just finished Law last year.
Remedies is really interesting - you have to bring in both torts and contracts stuff for the first time on the same situation. Getting down to what practising law is actually about!
Taxation law - the word “Taxation” made me run screaming. I’m sure someone else will come in and tell you what it’s like.
Trust law - if you’re good with language you’ll like it.
Legal Ethics - Or, Just don’t Fuck around with that Trust Account
Good luck! Study hard! (and Thank God it’s all over for me… )

I’d better go back and revise my notes then. I did *Torts * in 2002 and *Contracts * in 2003, so I’ve forgotten most of it.

Everyone seems to have that reaction, but I think *Taxation * will actually be quite interesting. I’m a geek, I know.

I really enjoyed the introductory stuff we did last semester in Equity. I do a lot of pension funds related work in my job, so I think trust law will come in handy.

That’s interesting that you can’t get credit from doing subjects from other faculties, 'cos IIRC (and I MIGHT be talking out of my arse here, but I don’t think so), at Melbourne Uni you are allowed a certain number of points per course that can be taken in different faculties.

For example, the History and Philosophy of Science department (at MU) is in the Arts faculty, but many of the students came from Medicine, Law and even Education. There were lots of students from Law doing Criminology (again in Arts) and the Department of Social Work (nominally in the Arts faculty) offered subjects for students who were not enrolled in the BSW.

Provided you have the necessary prerequisites, there is no no reason why you can’t take a Heinz variety of subjects at MU.

Where are you studying?

I’m studying at Macquarie University. I could have got credit if I had previously done any law subjects. But I haven’t.

Ooooh! I’ve just chosen mine:

  • Industry Placement Practicum (Travel and Tourism Management)
  • Military and Politics
  • Introduction to Peace and Conflict Analysis
  • Written Chinese IIIA
  • Ethnic Conflict and Nationalism

I’m excited!

I’m with kambuckta, and not history type art, real art. Fine Art where you get dirty while making things that confuse, enlighten, and/or anger people.

No? Well, at least buy a set of watercolor paints!

[sub]Doodle in the margins?

Good luck![/sub]

Cunctator, were you able to re-enrol online? My son has just spent a rather frustrating afternoon trying to do so. He’s going to re-enrol in person tomorrow. The online re-enrolment just wouldn’t work for some reason.

I don’t know if we should be offering support and happy thoughts to a man who aspires to be a lawyer. I mean, c’mon…can’t he be something with a little soul and heart, like a nice plumber? There is screwing people and there is screwing people and giving them a functioning toilet.

Good luck with the Travel & Tourism stuff. I did it for eight years. Up here in Michigan ( which we don’t have anything any remotely interesting for tourism like Australia.) it is a dying industry. I loved the variation and meeting scores of new people.

Your third class, Peace and conflict, sounds interesting. Very interesting. Why can’t they have interesting classes like this ( even the Chinese ) whenever I look at class courses. What is your major?

No, I didn’t even try re-enrolling online jabiru. I didn’t trust the system to work properly. Besides, I pay a lot of money for these courses, so I don’t see why I should have to do all the work of enrolling myself. Let the university staff do it. I just spent two minutes writing my subjects on the enrolment form and posted it to the university. Cost me all of 50 cents.

I’m not sure that I aspire to be a lawyer Shirley. I started the law degree more for fun and intellectual stimulation than anything else - plus the fact that a knowledge of law would be helpful in my current job and certainly won’t hurt me wherever I go. Whatever I do with it I don’t really see myself practising law as a full-time career.

So, you are saying you will not use this information for evil porpoises?

:dubious:

Two minutes?! When I was at Macquarie we had to set aside almost an entire day to go through the wretched re-enrolment process. I was actually thinking of returning to study this semester but I out-procrastinated myself. 2nd semester, perhaps.

Yes, that’s what it was like when I did my first degree there in the 1980s. However now I’m an external student, studying via distance education. The university can’t require externals to come to the campus since most of them live interstate. So we get the option of enrolling via the post, which is what I did. Quite literally you just write down the names of the subjects you want to do on the form, sign it and post it. The university admin people do all the rest.

I’ve really enjoyed Macquarie’s distance education law programme so far jabiru. Perhaps you can have a browse and see if there’s anything that takes your fancy.

Can I chime in too? I’ve got:

Engineering Law
Technology, Society, and Environment since 1800
Control Systems II
Energy Conversion
Artificial Organs
Advanced Engineering Materials
Mechanical Vibration Analysis
Mechanical Engineering Lab
It’s going to be a busy few months. But some of these look pretty interesting.

I wouldn’t study externally Cunctator. I’m not disciplined enough; I couldn’t even get my act together to send in the application in time. :smack:
