I've decided to watch "24"

Because of the writer’s strike, I’m going to go back and watch all the television I’ve missed the first time around. So far, I’m half way through the first season, and I’m riveted because of one sole reason:

Will Jack Bauer poop?!

I mean, at some point during the course of 24 hours, the man’s gotta take a dump. Anyway, don’t spoil it for me.

Any other suggestions for series that have aired for a few (or more seasons) I’ve missed out on? I like shows like LOST, Heroes, BSG, any kind of non-campy sci-fi, and so on. The more cliffhangery the better, since I won’t have to wait a week between eps.

.

I’ve occasionally gone more than 24 hours without taking a dump. A bad-ass like Jack Bauer should be able to hold it with without a problem, especially when the fate of the country is at stake.

You never see him eat or drink, so what is there to poop?

Have you seen Firefly yet? That’s a good’n.

And for the life of me, I can’t come up with a Jack Bauer poop joke…

Be warned that 24 gets unforgivably bad around season three or so. I don’t recommend watching any of the crap after that point.

I got a real kick out of the first three seasons of Alias on DVD (it’s got some sci-fi elements and is extremely cliffhangery), but it too got a bit ridiculous after a while.

Actually, you do see him eat briefly about halfway through season one.

Thanks all. I might give Alias a try next.

I did try Firefly on for size a while ago, but it wasn’t a good fit for some reason. I saw the movie Serenity as well… didn’t care for it.

I figure the goodness of 24 probably couldn’t last forever… I will tread into season 3 or 4 lightly, but I’ll watch it so long as it holds my attention.

They did show Jack Bauer eat some lunch in the first season, around 1 or 2 o’ clock… but no signs yet of a BM yet. That guy has bowels of brass, I tell ya.

My go to recomendation for BSG fans is Babylon 5 if you haven’t seen it. The first season is hard to get through. But once you make it into season 2 it becomes one of the best sf shows ever to have aired.

Jack Bauer probably takes his bathroom breaks right around the time the story arc shifts away to show how Kim has gotten herself into a potentially life-threatening situation Again.

…oh wait, no… that’s what* I *do.

Aside from the eyeball-clawing agony that is watching Kim’s antics, it’s a pretty damn good show, but it peaks around Season 3 and then falls down completely around Season 5 when it falls victim to its own formula.

I’ve been meaning to check this out too. For some reason I’ve been hesitant though. Tell me it’s much better than Star Trek. Not that ST is bad when it was at its best, it’s just that it never was able to get dark enough to appeal to my tastes.

I sometimes wish I could produce a whole bunch of clones of myself, and have them watch every TV series and movie ever made, and read every book that I was even remotely interested in, and report back to me on which ones I would really, really like and which ones I shouldn’t waste my time on. Am I the only one?

B5 does get decently dark, especially from the latter half of season 2 onwards. However, it really never appealed to me; although I can appreciate what they’re trying to do, I never got really sucked into the universe. Also, at that point I was beginning to appreciate more naturalistic sci-fi (Firefly, BSG), so I was finding the more formal scripted-ness of B5 and Star Trek less palatable. It’s worth a shot, though.

If you do go into season 3, be warned that the rockiest stuff is in the first third or so of the season. About two thirds of the way in, it starts to get really good for a while.

24 is one of those shows that is best watched when you have the giggles. Reading the associated Straight Dope thread after each episode is one good way to get you in that state…

B5 is showing its age IMHO, but the writing was so much better than Star Trek.

If you’re into sci-fi, have you seen Farscape? That was a great series, with four seasons plus a mini-series.

Just wait till you get to hours 15-18. “Jack takes a nap.”
Those were really boring episodes, IMO.

Babylon 5 was a great, but flawed show, but probably hasn’t aged well in a lot of ways. At the time, a lot of what it did was groundbreaking - story arcs, essentially the entire series is a novel set to 5 seasons of TV, a cynical sci-fi universe, all-CGI special effects, a creator who had enough control to create his vision, some other stuff. Some of those things have become more widespread and refined, which might make some of what B5 did look crude. Battlestar Galactica, for instance, from what I hear, probably refines a lot of ground that B5 paved.

And compared to its contemporary competition as far as sci-fi TV went - it came after TNG and alongside DS9 (which intentionally stole a lot of elements from the show - a lot of what makes DS9 the best trek show, the more realistic, gritty universe (relative to other star trek shows), the story arcs, etc. were taken deliberately from B5) - and was far far better than those shows.

There’s almost no technobabble - actual stories are told within the context of a sci-fi universe, rather than some nonsense unsatisfying technobabble creating a problem that nonsense unsatisfying technobabble later solved. The universe is much more interesting, darker, grittier, and believable. No preachy humans who’ve become the pinnacle of the universe and sneer at us 21st century barbarians.

When compared to something like Galactica, it’ll look old and somewhat cheesy. Compared to something like Star Trek the Next Generation, it’s great.

On the downside, there’s a lot of crap, especially at the very beginning and very end. Some of the early episodes of B5 like “infection” and “tko” are not quite Spock’s Brain, but they’re pretty terrible. Early on in the series they were using different writers, but towards the middle, as episodes were more and more devoted to resolving the main stories, they were written pretty much exclusively by the show’s creator. Not that everything he wrote was gold, but it’s a lot less hit or miss.

The dialog can sometimes be very theatric and unrealistic. There’s some cheesy stuff all over the series. The show was always facing cancellation and studio interference, and the story, which was mapped out before a frame of film was ever shot, needed to be adjusted - whether it be by studio-mandated cast changes, or accelerating the resolution of the story at the end of season 4 because a season 5 wasn’t expected, etc.

Overall, though, keeping its flaws in mind, and forgiving some of the early horrible episodes (which I can’t recommend skipping entirely, because they contain stuff that relates to the overall story), it’s really a great show. It sets out to do so much, and hits on a lot of it.

As long as you skip all but the last episode of Season 5.

No, it definitely hasn’t. I loved the show back in the day, and I put it back in fairly recently, and I’ve got to say it had a lot of pretty embarrassing moments.

Thanks for that SenorBeef, it went a long way into deciding whether or not B5 is for me. Seems an objective write up. Doesn’t sounds like something I could get into now… perhaps when it aired, it may have had a chance… but TV and my tastes have matured somewhat since then… so I might pass, unless I get desperate! I realize, I’ll be missing out on some good television in there, but as Thudlow alluded to above, there’s not enough time in your life to enjoy everything! Gotta choose wisely.

Alias sounds only okay to me… I did watch the pilot, and two following episodes when it was first on, and I was sorta “meh” about it. But maybe I need to give it another shot considering how popular it became.

Also, What’s all this noise I hear about Veronica Mars?

And FWIW, they need to turn The Lost Room into an ongoing series. But perhaps that deserves it’s own thread.
