Well, cats try not to show weakness. In a room full of rocking chairs, though, they will vehemently report pain as it happens.
I cannot read most of this thread. I’m still not over the loss of Harvey.
I can imagine how you feel, Idle Thoughts. 
Condolences, my friend. I’ve been there, and it’s terribly hard. There’s not going to be a perfect answer as to the timing, and sometimes all you can do is take comfort that you are acting based on love.
I wish we had let our last animal go sooner. The guilt of holding her so long still overshadows happier memories. I think your keycat is ready.
She doesn’t have a good quality of life. It’s time to give her some peace.
Took her to the vet today and she went out peacefully.
RIP Calliecat (AKA the keycat).
