I've just re-read "Teemings: In The Wake Of The Fire"

You dirty sons of bitches, you’re dead.

Hide where you want.

You dirty Al Qida sons of bitches you are dead.

We will never stop looking.

I’m gonna go have some quiet time now.

I second the emotion, if not the sentiment. The people who did these things must be brought to justice, and we will continue searching for as long as it takes.

Still, it’s important that when fighting monsters, you do not become one yourself. This country’s leaders, lawmakers, soldiers, and (most importantly) citizens need, above all, to remember that.

I’m a little ashamed of some of the decisions we’ve made post-911. Not ready to put Bush’s head on a pike like a lot of Dopers, but enough to give me pause – and enough to question whether this is still the land of the free, or if it’s become something else.

Only time will tell, I guess.

What are you talking about? The Bushies stopped looking a while ago.
They even said that that they had him contained, so that his capture is no longer on their agenda.

Not that I could ever cite it, but I can’t help thinking that the search for Al Qaeda operatives continues on all over the world, multilaterally and under the international press’s radar. I’m pretty sure there’s a lot of secret stuff going on, and I’m not confident the international press can deliver the Dope. YMMV.

AFAIK, (no cite … but where was Pat Tillman killed?) there are still American assets in Afghanistan … including some near the Pakistani border. AFAIK, Pakistani forces have their side of the border covered.

Not until early October, anyway.

Oh yeah, because retribution is always the answer.

Frankly, if BinLaden and his cronies are anywhere NEAR Afghanistan and/or Pakistan, they’re bigger idiots that I could have ever expected.

I couldn’t say one way or the other. It’s likely OBL was out of the area even long before 9-11-01 – Bill Clinton had ordered missles fired upon his suspected location in Afghanistan. If OBL played it safe, he was probably long gone.

Still, I do personally believe that more than a few Taliban and AQ agents are more or less trapped in various places in the Hindu Kush mountains. They can probably hide out, move around a little, and get aid from sympathetic locals for the rest of their lives … but I don’t think they can easily escape the area thanks to the US/Pakistani military presence.

OBL may be in there, though he probaly isn’t. Neither would surprise me.

I also don’t think OBL is all that valuable a strategic target. Politically – yes, he’s valuable. But the AQ cells can (and do AFAIK) work autonomously. So the AQ hunt has to be worldwide, multilateral, and (ideally) covert.

I’m better now.

But I don’t want justice, I want revenge.

Reading that made this feeling as fresh as if the strikes were just yesterday.

Great, not just a drama queen, but a retributive one. Just what the world needs! Hurray, hurrah! Warmongering abounds!

GaWd, Did you [re]read it? It might not be the ‘right’ thing to do, but I perfectly understand Bosda Di’Chi of Tricor.

There are some who say that Osama has become irrelevant. That it’s OK to leave him sitting in his cave, eating peeled grapes and laughing at America’s impotence. Those people are wrong. Bin Laden needs killing, BADLY!

Yes! Because once Osama is gone, all of the violence everywhere will stop!

And that is proof positive of the lack of humanity and understanding and civilization of the people of the United States of America. Killing for sport, or revenge or retribution.

I do not and cannot “understand” his feelings.

Sam

Why would you say such a stupid thing jarbabyj?

To suggest that 50,000 wrongs don’t make a right?

You’re using too broad of a brush – gum speaks for himself. Not that he doesn’t have ample company, but I think American opinions, as usual, run the gamut.

I read that as sarcasm, which Jarbaby can be known for. I believe her tongue is firmly planted in her cheek.

Yes, I do speak for myself. And to think I’m not even American. Speaking of which:

No? You’re against death penalty?
I am. But that doesn’t mean I can’t understand someone feeling revengeful.

That doesn’t mean Bosda Di’Chi of Tricor is going to act upon it. It merely shows he’s hurt - and human.

Sorry for mischaracterizing you as American.

Most definitely.

While I understand feeling revengeful, I also understand that killing another human being, or hunting him down to the ends of the earth and wiping him off the planet will advance nobody’s cause, save making a few politicians very happy and briefly sating many people’s desire to see people brutally punished.

What is there to act upon? He’s not in the military. This isn’t about acting upon your anger, it’s about the desire for vengeance. About the split-second satisfaction another’s death will bring about within yourself.

Nope, it shows he’s a drama queen who is in need of therapy.

We all were affected by the events of 9-11. Greatly. But in the last 3 years if you haven’t gotten over a majority of the emotions that controlled all of us in that period of time, you need counseling. If reading someone’s account of the day or moment drives you to call for retribution, vengeance, and blood, you need some support.

Now is the time for healing, not sating one’s need for blood. Best of luck, Bosda.
