I've met my first fellow Doper (sort of)

I haven’t got along to a Doper meeting yet, so only know you lot thru postings.

I did run into Fingolfin on another board (he was called Testudo there), but now I’m getting closer to a real life encounter.

I’m playing chess in a match last night and pull off a fine rook sacrifice.
A spectator nods at me, so I wander over, chuffed with my play (I’m not usually that exciting!).
The conversation begins…

“You’re glee, aren’t you?”
“Yes, I am - how did you know?”
“Well you play chess for a private school and live in the Midlands.”
“Excellent, I’ve always wanted to meet a fellow Doper.”
“Well I’m not, but my sister is. She posts as Nadin.”

Close enough!

So hi, Nadin (even though we’ve never met) and I hope your studies are going well!

Hey!It’s weird, I didn’t think he’d remember, I mentioned you to him a while ago- in a “do you know this chess guy way?”. It’s not fair - he gets to meet a Doper before I do, but I would have been too shy to come and say hello - I lurk and read in the background.

Well now we have been introduced!

I felt very pleased to have been identified, so thanks to you for that.
This board is fun

I think I would have found that kind of creepy Glee.

I mean, sacrificing a rook!
Did you win your match.

White:

King g3, Queen d3, Rook a6, Bishop g2, pawns h3, g4, f3, c2, b3

Black (to move):

King g8, Queen c5, Rook f6, Bishop c6, pawns h6, g7, e5, d6, b4

  1. … Rxf3+!
  2. Bxf3 Qg1+
  3. Bg2 Qxg2+
  4. Kh4 Qf2+
  5. Qg3 g5+
  6. Resigns

If 6. Kh5 Be8+ 7. Kxh6 Qf6 mate.

(Or earlier 3. Kh4 Qf2+ 4. Kh5 Be8+ 5. Qg6 Bxg6+ 6. Kxg6 Qxf3 wins easily.)

Whoaoooooooaoaaaaa …
Ok. I now give up any notion of playing chess against people other than my wife.
glee, too bad you can’t make the same trek as Francesca in January … I’d love to meet you in person.

I’ve never met anyone “from the Internet” in real-life. I’m not at all shy about meeting people; it’s just that I’m reasonably new to this whole online business.

I have, however, seen and heard a Doper in real life. Funny story, really. I went to a play performed by Medicine students. A Doper, tritone then posted the next day that she had performed in that very play. So I’ve heard a fellow Doper sing and dance, but never knew it at the time.

Narrad, meeting people from online is like eating a piece of Halloween candy. You eat one, and then the next one looks pretty good too, and then you have to have that Kit Kat, and then…
