I've Moved To Chicago! Let's Get Together!

The thread title says it all, really. My father died recently and I got a little money from his retirement, so I’ve moved from Sand Springs, Oklahoma, to Chicago and I’d like to meet some Chicagoland Dopers. Maybe have a little mini-Dopefest or something like that.

I’m sorry to hear about your father.

I hope you enjoy Chicago - I don’t remember the last time there was a Chicago Dopefest (though I don’t really follow these types of things).

I’d be curious to hear your impressions of Chicago, coming from Sand Springs, OK. Do you find people here generally more or less polite, etc.? I’ve lived in Chicago all of my life and haven’t traveled much, so I’m always curious what other people think of the city.

In short, Welcome!

Welcome! I just moved here a couple months ago myself.

I think Chicago’s great. People kept telling me it was a huge city: crowded, dangerous, dirty, etc, etc. But I’ve lived in Seoul half my life, and Chicago seems laid-back and immaculately clean by comparison. Plus the people are much friendlier here than in most major cities. I wouldn’t mind living here for a few years after I get my degree.

Sorry about your father.

I’m here in Chicago and I’d be happy to engage in a meetup. When’s the move expected?

Impressions of Chicago… Well, people have been pretty polite so far. Though I haven’t had too many interactions with people I didn’t already know to some degree. So far, I absolutely love it. I’m slowly developing a circle of friends and that’s nice.

I moved on the first of this month.

Howdy, Midnight!! Welcome! I’m very sorry to hear about your dad - my condolences.

Glad to have you in our fair city - are you in the city proper or the 'burbs? Depending on where you are, I’d love to meet you in person!

I’m in the city proper. Uptown is the name of the neighborhood, I think (Montrose and Hazel). And though I wasn’t close to my father, I appreciate all the kind comments.

Since I’ve yet to find a job, I’m free just about any time on any day that anyone wants to get together. Just name the time and place (and public transportation directions if it’s in the suburbs).

Welcome! You’ve moved to the area that I just moved away from to go live in the 'burbs… I’m regretting that decision now. You’re not too far away from the Uptown and the Kinetic Playground. Take advantage!

Just giving this a bump to see if anyone’s still interested in getting together.

Good bump, and welcome. Sorry about your dad, but at least you landed in a nice area.

The last actual, semi-formal Dopefest I remember around here was the one I missed in summer, '05, I believe at Giordano’s downtown. Several times, you’ll catch one or two getting together on our own. Eleanorigby is way south, but I made it out to see her once. Nice lady and NOT OCD. Really.

What Exit was in town a while back and I sat with him and my Wife for food/drink.

I guess we’re like that around here - friendly just not all that organized.

That said, I will find myself in the downtown area - Right around Michigan Ave. near the river next Friday, the 17th. There’s a convention that weekend downtown every year, it all gets rolling on Friday evening, but I usually check in Thursday night and take the Wife to a fancy dinner, then aimlessly kill time in that area during the day on Friday.

My e-mail’s in my profile, if you or hell, anyone can make it down I’d be glad to get together for a lunch Friday. I’m pretty free til about 3 or 4 that afternoon if anyone’s up to a meet.

Cool! Check your email, Mr Bus Guy.

I’m still around for a meetup, though weekday lunches are gonna be tough. Email me at my username at hotmail. Put something eyecatching in the subject line.

Hey, Midnight, I’m just a little west of you over in Lincoln Square (the square formed my Lawrence and Montrose on the N and S and Western and Damen on the W and E.). I’m down for some sort of meetup sometime.

Also, based on your username, you should TOTALLY check out the midnight showing of Hedwig at the Music Box Theater, complete with a full live band and people acting out the songs. They do it about once a month.

Yep, that’s correct. I was at that one.

If someone organizes something let me know. If I can make it I will, if not, I won’t.
