…to encourage you to hang on and in there. My hatred for smoking makes me a true cheerleader for anyone quitting. In addition to Satan, my former boss quit cold-turkey last June and not only has she stayed off them, she felt so good she started working out and eating better and LOST 25 lbs (when last we spoke). She’s making herself healtier and healthier. My father-in-law also quit a few months ago, and I’m SO proud of him.
So, here’s the cheer:
You can do it!
You can do it!
Smoke-Free FreakFreely!
Yay!
(Okay, so I was never a cheerleader, but I’m glad to hear your doing it!!)
I went through several abortive attempts to get off the cancer sticks, each one slightly more successful than the previous.
I finally kicked the habit about two years ago, although I will admit to the occasional smoke when drinking socially. However, the last time I bludged a smoke to go with my beer, I was quickly overcome with the headspins. What a powerful deterrent - I have not smoked since, and now I don’t even miss it.
My advice is this:
If you can’t quit instantly, try quitting by degrees. For example, switch to milder smokes and cut back on how many you smoke per day. It seemed to work for me.
Hang in there.
You can make it,
if you’re stubbern enough.
I have never smoked,
but my father smokes
and he has tryed severel times to quit,
but he has not made it.
So, I know how hard it is.
You have all to win,
nothing to lose.
Good luck!!
Order a copy of “The Insider” on DVD and watch it whenever you feel the urge to smoke.
I tried to quit smoking for the following reasons, none of which were motivating enough:
Girls I wanted to date hated it
I got short of breath simply walking down the block
My clothes reeked
My teeth were turning yellow
I coughed all the time
I got grouchy if I went an hour without smoking a cigarette
I would constantly have to leave my workstation and go outside to smoke, which fucked up my productivity
Wanna know what finally motivated me enough to quit?
I realized that corporate a**holes were killing me and making money from it. I couldn’t stand the fact that I had allowed myself to be conned by subtle but ingenious marketing tactics. Somewhere, somebody was collecting around $25 a week from me, slowly killing me in the process, and laughing all the way to the bank. Bastards…
I myself have recently switched to ultra-lights from the lights I’ve been smoking for the last decade or so. I had quit for a few months last year but restarted when TW left. I regret it and would really rather have the money if I could just get this @#%$% nicotiene-stained monkey off my back. I guess I’ll just have to try starving him out until he lets go.
Woohoo!! Michael, that’s great. Good luck. Someday, I’ll try to beat the habit too. It’s hard. I’ve tried. Again, good luck and don’t go killing anyone!
Incidentally, was today some sort of official stop-smoking day? A couple people I know from other discussion sites also picked today to stop smoking, as did one of my husband’s co-workers.
Go Freak! If you need a sponsor, I’d be happy to do it. I’m sure plenty of other Dopers would too. For some reason, I’m unable to pull up old threads, but I’d like to refer you to the late, great oldie entitled “The Great Straight Dope Smoke Out.” What a wonderful thread that was.
This is a question for those of you who quit by switching to progressivly lighter cigs. What brands did you go through? I’m smoking winston lights, what’s a good next step? Tommrow is cig purchase day so a quick answer is needed.
