J&D's Bacon Salt question (don't get too excited)

I just picked up three jars of J&D’s Bacon Salt on the cheap from woot. I didn’t realize until they arrived that they were low sodium. What I thought was weird, though, is that they are labeled 2.5 oz (54g). What am I missing here? 2.5oz is 71g (as evidenced by my regular jars).

I’ll live with the missing g’s, I’m just curious.

Could it just be a misprinted label, which is why it was so cheap?

I only came in here because it was Bacon Salt and I really just wanted to say . . . . mmmmmm!

The bottle of Bacon Salt, Hallowed be Thy Name, here on my desk is labeled

NET WT. 2.5 oz. (71g)

Could they be mixing volume (2.5 volumetric ounces) with weight (grams)? They shouldn’t be, but maybe…

They shrank their bottles. The one I have here in my classroom says 2.75 oz (78g).

Here’s a link to a picture on their site. It’s not a misprint- or if it is, they’re not doing anything about it.

Looks like someone who sent the specs to the company printing the labels goofed. 57g is 2.0 oz.

Now, the question is: Which is the true net weight, the 2.5 ounces or the 57 grams?

Since I know how important Bacon Salt is to us here, I’ll measure tonight.

I know nothing about the weight. But I did get those on woot–the applewood is awesome!

I happen to have most of a gift box left here. Almost all of the remaining bottles – Original, Peppered, Cheddar, Applewood, Hickory, and Mesquite – are labeled 57g. Only the Natural variety says 71g.

I weighed an empty bottle and it was 24g. They’re 104g when full, so that’s 80g (2.8 oz.) of bacony goodness. Apparently you get slightly more than your money’s worth.

Agreed- I just got around to it today, but the contents of the bottles labeled 57g actually weighed 78.5g. I guess you can put whatever you want on labels these days.

More disturbingly, when I went to open the jars, two of the three were missing the cardboard/foil seal. My kids don’t admit to opening them, so I don’t know what to think.

hellpaso, if you’re checking in at all, could you let me know if all your bottles were sealed?

Yes–mine were sealed because Mr. HP and I had to immediately rip them open to taste them.

Thanks. I’ve taken my chances. After all, what could anyone possibly do to tamper with a powdered substance?

I love the story of this company. Every time I go to their site, there is something new there.

Baconaise… MMMMvelopes (bacon flavored envelopes), Cheddar Bacon salt, malt-salt, etc…

True American ingenuity at it’s best… and vegetarian too! (not that I care about that, but it’s a fun factoid.)

I just got out all 9 of mine and they all say 2.5 oz(71 g).
I only paid for 3; they sent me 6 free for their error. I most posted this to gloat!

It would be interesting to see how much 71g weighs in their world. By the way, the low-sodium is actually tastier to me than the regular stuff. I’m not on any sort of sodium watch, these just happened to be what woot was selling.
