I was watching Return of the Jedi on Disney Plus recently and I noticed something weird. In the version of the movie I am used to much of Jabba’s dialogue was subtitled on screen. This time the subtitles were not on screen but actually included as part of the closed captioning. Weird but I assumed it might be because I have CC turned on on my Roku.
Flash forward to today where a tweet showed up on my feed about how several movies on streaming have their title interstitials removed. Their example was how the Chapters in the Royal Tenenbaums were blank on screen and the text was instead in the closed captioning.
A Visual Effects person I follow explained that they make language neutral versions of movies for foreign markets which remove all text for dubbing and the services tend to use these prints. I’m not complaining or anything. Just thought it was interesting because I literally had just noticed something was amiss.
