Yeah, I think it’s subjective, but I don’t think it’s so subjective that a majority of people thought the first two posts cited were sweet and kind.
Since some of those posts crossed the line for you also, do you not think that there was ANY jackalish behavior going on? And if there was, what is your feeling about it? Do you think it’s well-intentioned? Do you think it adds to reasoned discourse? Do you think it was helpful to the OP?

I think you need to read over those threads again. And, instead of putting your spin on it, think about what the OP/subject of those threads was saying. Notice how many of the people weighing in had others do the same to them. Since we can’t rehash the thread here let’s just say if someone you loved and trusted did something awful to you, let’s say they slapped you in public. And someone came here and started a thread about how wonderful it is and how much fun he is having repeatedly slapping his wife in public. Wouldn’t you be upset? You know how it feels. The pain, the embarrassment, the betrayal. Wouldn’t you post about how awful it is to get slapped and what a terrible person the OP is for doing it?
Seemed to me that those posts had nothing to do with out-outraging each other or being jackals. It was about being pissed that someone was enjoying hurting someone else, and not just a random, vague hurt, but a hurt you are really familiar with.
Don’t bother looking for my “jackal” posts. I read the threads but I didn’t post to them.
If there was any doubt left at all as to what my OP was meant to be venting about, then I’ll give an example situation.
Bananas Foster goes to his sister’s house, sneaks in, and takes 50$ He then goes home and spends this money on crack and hookers. The next morning, he posts on the Dope asking what kind of coffee is best after a long night partying. A poster asks him how hard he partied, and he then tells word-for-word what he did. Penis ensues.
Now, let’s give some example types of posts.

Out of these four kinds, only the final one really irritates me and it’s only that one that I would call “jackal behavior,” If Type 4 comes after several posts of type 3, then it’s even more angersome.

Starving Artist said I was simpatico with the jackals, which is why my pitched defense in this thread. I’ve been thinking about it, and I guess my feeling is, when someone pours their shit out in the brazen, sometimes arrogant, often unrepentant way MizGrand did, with repeated contributions that exacerbated the situation, that’s what is going to happen in the Pit. Is it great and wonderful? Of course not. You’re right that several of the posts in that thread were just shitty. But it’s the price you pay for all the good advice, for the attention, for the opportunity to vent. But again, forget it Jake. It’s fucking Chinatown.

Good point, but this sounds like a two wrongs making a right type of argument. If something hurt you, hurting someone else who is engaging in that type of behaviour doesn’t make your hurt any better.
Well on second thought, of the four behaviors I listed two posts up, Type 3 can be jackal-like too, but it’s much much less common than Type 4, for me anyway.

I think Type 3 depends almost entirely on context. The critical but highly subjective criteria being that the anger and venom matches the tone of the thread and the actions of the OP. Of course, these types are purely theoretical constructs that I devised in order to try to bring a semblance of order to what is shaping up to be a possibly productive discussion.

But, I was trying to show that there are alternative reasons other than the pitizens being sharks in the water waiting for chum that a thread might go badly. OK, so, sometimes we are. But, sometimes, the subject is emotional and emotions run high and people go a little off the nut.
