I have never seen an episode of Jackass. I intend to keep it that way. But, I am profoundly saddened by this statement
If in my 27 years I have achieved nothing else(not an untenable assumption), I have proven that through struggle and perseverance, common sense can be defeated.
I just got back from the movie. I was literally screaming with laughter at some of the stunts. There is scene where Johnny Knoxville gets his ass severely beaten in a boxing match with Butterbean. Knoxville takes about nine brutal blows to the head and then goes down with a concussion. The first groggy words out of his mouth when he is revived; “Is Butterbean Ok?”
HEY!, put a Spoiler warning Diogenes.
Ok, who killed your dog ratty? You don’t like it? Fine by us that do. You think its stupid? You sir, are correct. You think looking up to somebody that is having fun with his life is a moron? Go fuck yourself. I’m sorry that you are not having as much fun with yours as our good friend Mr. Knoxville is with his. And the bastard is getting mildly wealthy doing it too. God forbid somebody get paid to do what they love. And God forbid somebody else respects that.
I can’t wait until Monday afternoon when I get to see it.
"But yeah, it’s one of those things you have to get. "
No…I get it, I just find it screamingly UN-funny.
Then again…I won’t watch “reality shows” - never seen more than five minutes of one (yes, including “The Real World.” Yes, yes…and “Road Rules.”) - because I am of the opinion that there’s already an overabundance of attention-whoring, fame vampires, and blatant fucking stupidity without manufacturing MORE for entertainment.
I mean, poop is funny. I can sit around with my kids and agree that poop is funny. I can hang out with my friends and we will agree…poop is funny. However, I can also state unequivocably that I am not going to spend $8.00 for some schmuck in a flannel to tell me that HIS poop is REALLY funny.
Doesn’t mean I don’t “get it.” Just means I find it abysmally stupid.
As a side note, I have reason to believe that Tom Greene is actually a brilliant man…but I still think his comedy suck bawllz and he has all of the apparent wit of my three-year-old. And while my three-year-old is intelligent, I wouldn’t give him a TV series or a role in a film.
It’s possible to “get” something, yet not find it funny. I “get” “What’s grosser than 10 babies in a garbage can? One baby in ten garbage cans!” Doesn’t mean I’m laughing.
I’m sorry; rather than just being argumentative, let me explain what I mean.
Some of us Jackass fans find a quality in the show that entertains us, beyond the “hyuck, them peoples is gittin hurt”. It’s not a defect in our sense of humor. We’re not trying really hard to convince ourselves and each other that what we see is funny. You obviously don’t have to take our word for it, but we’d like you to believe that there really is something there that could entertain an intelligent sense of humor, and that that is why we like Jackass.
To me, the fact that you don’t think that quality is there is the very definition of not getting it. It sounds insulting, but I don’t mean it that way. “Not getting it” doesn’t mean I think you’re stupid, or that you have no sense of humor, just that you’re not tuned in to the humor that the show broadcasts. (even that sounds like a criticism, but it’s not). But we are, and to us it’s very real.
Well, one thing’s for sure. Johnny Knoxville is pretty smart.
Knoxville (or, if you wish to refer to him by his real name, Clapp) says that “There’s nothing funnier than an untalented stuntman”. He doesn’t let his 6-year-old daughter watch his work-only the tamer pranks. He also insisted on the R rating because he didn’t want kids to see it without a parent. (I won’t comment about the lackadaisicalness of the American theater system.) The AP quotes him as saying “I always stress ‘don’t try this at home.’ Every interview I’ve given on the show is one big, long warning.” He’s also felt sorry for, and is sad to hear about, the various people who imitate his stunts.
He may make a jackass out of himself, but he’s a smart jackass.
Am I the only person bothered by the idea that ratty is making a tremendous (and somewhat comical, in its cliched futility) rant about a show that he/she admits to not having seen? Let’s refer back to Ebert’s Law of SomethingOrOther: Movies [and I’m extending this to TV shows] are not about what they are about; they are about how they are about it. This OP seems on a par with saying, “I hate Nazis, so Schindler’s List is an evil movie.” (Never mind that it was brilliantly and beautifully anti-Nazi.) “I hate gross, lowbrow comedy, so I won’t watch South Park.” (Never mind that since The Simpsons became irrelevant, South Park has been the single sharpest, most intelligent source of social satire/commentary being written today.)
Please: I am not, in any way, trying to equate Jackass with Schindler’s List. I’m saying that maybe, just maybe, one should actually watch an episode of the show before deciding what they think, rather than basing their entire knowledge of the show on a conversation between two brain-dead vandals overheard in a fast-food joint.
One more thing:
I’m pretty sure Juvenal said this very same thing back, what, 2200 years ago?
Hmm, I noticed the movie out, didn’t think it sounded good. I am just that type though, different stokes for different folks.
I am the type that looks at all those hours wasted by people watching TV with disdain. Well, I look at the people with disdain at least. Nothing worse IMO than waste. Too many people turning to mindless activities, rather than stimulating, challenging ones. Of course, I cant say that about too many on this site, as they do come here to stimulate themselves. All is not lost there.
I say if you like this type of movie, and I see nothing wrong with watching movies or tv once in awhile, then watch it, if not, then don’t. Not going to hurt anybody there. I personally feel that anybody with an IQ of average or better that wastes 20+ hours a week watching mindless drek like this is doing something wasteful, which IMO is stupid. Draw, read, write, do something other than letting your brain grow lax and lazy. Watch the discovery channel if you absolutely MUST watch 80 hours of TV a week.
Somebody with an IQ of 100+ that sits around watching TV 20+ hours a week instead of doing something productive is as pathetic as that jackass that refuses to work and lives off somebody like a scrub. A wastrel contributing nothing. At least the people on this board contribute something intellectually. Inspiring somebody or teaching something.
I really got off on a tangent didn’t I? Anyhow, it is entertainment, if it entertains, its not broke. Yeah.
I meant to say that wastes 20+ hours a week watching the mindless drek on TV now a days. Not sure where the “Like this” came from. Freudian slip perhaps? I guess I do have a hidden bias towards this movie. Other than it doesn’t sound good.
I was at a rehearsal dinner Friday night when Jackass: the Movie came up. Most of the guests were 25 - 35 years old and everyone started telling their favorite Jackass skit. We were howling with laughter but then noticed looks of brutal horror smeared across the faces of the parents and grandparents of the wedding party who were listening, stunned, from the other end of the table.
If you’ve seen the show, you realize how silly and innocent it is. If you haven’t, it’s hard to comprehend physical malfeasance being so damn funny.
But it is.
When they dug that hole in the backyard, covered it with a cloth and leaves and filmed Bam’s dad driving into it with a riding mower, I just about crapped my socks.
This is it for me too. Those guys just have fun and their excitement/glee over how a stunt is going to go and reactions to each other’s performance are hilarious.
And Johnny Knoxville is hot. I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say, enjoy the view when he has no shirt and some slouchy pants on at the zoo.
I saw the movie this weekend and laughed my ass off. I usually hate audience noise but even I was like, “Oh, shit, what’s he gonna do with that?!”
And Epimetheus, I have friends who would say the same thing about spending 20+ hours a week on the Internet. Whatever.
