James Taylor - Handy Man

I’ve never quiet understood the lyrics

OK, so, at the beginning of the song

  • Hey girls, gather round
Listen to what I’m puttin’ down
Hey baby, I’m your handy man*

Then he sings

I fix broken hearts, I know, but I truly can

The way he fixes broken hearts

I whisper sweet things, you tell all your friends
They’ll come running to me

So, uhm…if a woman’s boyfriend/fiance/husban leaves her, they’ll run to James Taylor? That can’t be right. I know the answer is probably obvious, but I can’t figure it out, what the hell is he talking about?

Thank you.

Maybe it helps if you know that the song was written by Otis Blackwell with Jimmy Jones, and first recorded by the latter in around 1964.

Sorry, I looked the site, and it didn’t help me to understand the lyrics any better.

IOW, I fix your broken heart by whispering sweet things to you. Your friends with broken hearts will be so impressed by the job I’ve done on you they’ll run to me to have their hearts fixed too.

OK, I got it now. Thanks.

Yeah, but I still don’t get the karma, karma, karma part.

In case you’re serious – it’s “come-a, come-a, come-a” (originally “come, come, come.”)

…I’m your “handy” maaaaaaan.

What’s not to understand?
