That was by design. He specifically told the White House photographer that he wouldn’t allow any pictures to be taken. Just another layer to show his consciousness of guilt.

Which shows that no matter how many times Fredo has watched The Godfather, he still doesn’t quite get what the phrase “Go to the mattresses” means. He was just trying to sound like a gangster. Which he sort of is.

Am I the only one who realizes that he mixed up his references?

He should have said, “Go to the mat”. I’m 50/50 on whether or not this make him look less stupid, or more stupid, though.

Interesting. I’m one of the only people in the world who hasn’t seen any of The Godfather movies. I thought the expression was “go to the mat” (from wrestling), to wit:

go to the mat

Fight until one side or another is victorious, as in The governor said he’d go to the mat for this bill. This term comes from wrestling and evokes the holding of an opponent when both contestants are down on the mat, the padded floor-covering used in matches. It has been used figuratively since about 1900.

My conclusion is that Don Jr. doesn’t know shit from Shinola and misused the phrase, thinking that “mat” was short for “mattresses.”

Yeah, I saw that as I continued to read the thread. I was out of the house last night, so didn’t follow this in real time. I just watched the whole session tonight*. It did seem to take a while for people to point this out, though!

My five-year-old caught me laughing at the “That’s All, Folks” Warner Bros closing theme and insisted that I explain why it was funny. I did an EILI5* on why the man was fleeing from a mob of his own creation and that people were mocking him for it. Then I had to explain what the music was - he hasn’t seen Looney Tunes enough.

So now he’s laughing his ass off at Roadrunner & Coyote shorts. I guess this makes up for him dozing off while I listened to the hearings on the radio on the ride home from preschool.
