Jan 6 Hearings Follow-Along & Commentary Thread (Starts Jun 9, 2022)

Maybe that’s why Trump wanted the classified documents: So he could share classified plans with his followers on how to build bomber airplanes to use on Congress. [/s]

That doesn’t show a lie unless you’re claiming that cheerleaders are always inciting violence.

Even this guy?

Maybe not so far-fetched as you might think. From @ThelmaLou 's link:

I can see Trump thinking he could somehow use this information to his advantage. How, exactly, I have no idea, but it would fit with the way he thinks.

… except Miller included a link to the violent messages in his text to whomever he sent the text to. (Meadows, I believe.) So he obviously showed he was aware of the effect his statements had on the readers of the pro-Trump forum, something like donald.win, or whatever the place is called.

And then Miller testifies to the Committee that if he learned his statements had garnered such an effect, he would have reported it to the Secret Service. Which he didn’t. So he lied to the Committee.

Ah, I didn’t catch that part, apologies.

I’m guessing something about McCarthy and five Republicans who could have made the vote not unanimous.

1/6 hearing? What hearing? From the Fox News website right now:

The Democrats will probably lose the House so, by the time a subpoena could be acted upon - after all appeals and whatnot - the Committee will already be shut down.

I expect that there was really no purpose to the subpoena except to get enough headlines that it forces at least a few Republicans to feel like they should check out the hearing.

My fault – I failed to mention it, and it was a rather important detail!

Is this thread all done now? I’m sad. I liked this thread. I liked hearings about proving what a bastard trumpy is. Are you going to lock this thread or just leave it open so we can wander through the sets that have been struck, the abandoned wreckage and maybe pick up bits of detritus for souvenirs. Or maybe save the thread and use it to discuss trumpy getting and ignoring his subpoena? If the apocalyptic day ever comes when he testifies before the committee, we could use it for that… I get nostalgic very easily…

I can provide more info on this; wife used to be a court reporter.

When typing on a stenograph machine, they’re not typing letters, they’re typing syllables. Usually the court reporter will have at least two dictionaries their machines are referencing: a personal dictionary that the reporter created over time and a job dictionary that contains specific names and such for that job. Since Pence and pants are syllabically similar, the reporter probably hit what they thought they put in the job dictionary as Pence but it translated as pants in realtime. That would be something they clean up after they’re done typing.

Aww, ya softie.

We don’t as a rule close threads so long as they remain useful and active on point. “On point” being the operative words. But once they become a repository for hijacks, then there is good reason to close them. Since this one was based on such a narrow and specific subject, it will probably be closed eventually. My preference is to leave it as a record of the proceedings as they unfolded and the discussion that ensues.

To be clear, it’s not a hijack for someone to discuss information that arises from the hearings. It’s a hijack to start talking about other topics such as the FBI search and seizure, e.g., or to focus myopically on a single detail that arises from the hearings to the exclusion of all else.

Probably better to start a new thread for when if Trump ignores his subpoena.

Hope this clarifies my thinking re your thread.

I completely forgot that it was my thread. :woman_facepalming:t4: They grow up and become independent so fast… and then they never call…except when they need money.

Maybe you could ask people for their final thoughts on the hearing and its immediate aftermath for a few days and then <sob> quietly close it.

As more stuff happens, people may want to refer back to it. Can you do that with a closed thread? (I don’t really know much of what goes on, do I?)

I like the idea of henceforth referring to Pence as Mr. Pants. It’s better than Mr. Flypaper.

(Looks at the Ukraine invasion thread) You’re telling me. It’s about to hit against the stops.

Trump has reacted to the committee’s plans to subopena him. I couldn’t bring myself to look at Truth Social, but I found this from the BBC:

Pertinent part:

CNN did show the entire message from Trump, on TV a few moments ago, and as expected, he led off with “Unselect Committee.”

Should have gone to CNN in the first place. Here’s the full text:

Taken from here:

Eventually there is going to be a committee report published and I think discussion of that would be on topic for the thread.

That final vote was a rather cathartic ending for the session, and for the overall series of hearings up to now. I can imagine the dramatic score swelling in the background as they went member by member, each voting “aye” to unanimously approve the subpoena of the movie’s villain, Donald J. Trump.
And then, as the final gavel drops and the members begin to leave the room, the music reaches a crescendo, the camera pans back, and the credits start to roll.

I think so, too. I have no current plans to close the thread at all, unless it devolves into only hijacks that can’t be controlled with gentle mod notes. Posters often come back even years later to make pertinent comments, and I see no reason that can’t be the case for the January 6th thread, too.
