Jan 6 Hearings Follow-Along & Commentary Thread (Starts Jun 9, 2022)

Team Normal - Team Normal - T-Shirt | TeePublic

knew this would be a thing soon. for regular lawyers.

The type seems positioned a little high on the chest.

And you know what the worst thing is about this? It’s a pretense that anything about the last nearly 6 years was anything close to normal. Things like these t-shirts normalize the entire shit show, softening up the public for the next time it happens.

one of the lawyer commentators said they needed to get one of the inevitable tee shirts, sure enough, they were out.

today boiled down to trump desperately turning to anyone who could tell him there may be possibly a way to get to a win. turning those on the white house onto “team normal” or “team rudy”.

But she sat through all that testimony because it was her duty. She was on a jury and she was going to do the best she could at what she needed to do. And, once she was empaneled on that jury, she had to show up every day and listen, or she was going to get a warrant for her detention.

The January 6th commission can’t order the whole country to jury duty on this subject, more’s the pity. Heck, they can’t even order every broadcaster to carry what they put out. So they can’t “grab people by the neck and force them to drink from the well of truth” in any meaningful sense. At best, they can convince people that what they are saying is important enough to pay attention. As long as that’s true, you’ll only be able to move the needle so much among those who opt to tune in.

The first hearing was to tell people what they were about to be told. These middle hearings are to tell the story. The last hearing will be telling people what they had been told. Without subjecting the nation to the Ludovico technique, I’m not sure what else can be done.

I thought I saw somewhere that Stepian’s lawyer was going to appear and read a prepared statement on Stepian’s behalf. I wanted to hear that.

did the testimony on his raising money on the election fraud just open people up to wire fraud?

Open who up to wire fraud? The operatives soliciting all those donations, it would seem. Not the dupes who sent in donations. (Will they be able to demand their money back?)

On that topic…

Last week, Fox News was the only major outlet not to air the primetime hearing hosted by the House committee investigating the January 6 riot at the US Capitol. But for the committee’s daytime session on Monday, Fox plans to join the rest of the pack…

I once had a boss that was literally a pathological liar. And I do mean pathological - he couldn’t not lie, even when it was seriously to his detriment and there were zero consequences to telling the truth. He was a bit petty at times, but otherwise a pretty mild-mannered character rather than a malignant tyrant, so he was easier to tolerate than a Trump-type. But it did give me a lot of insight into that kind of mind-set, because this guy quickly convinced himself within a repetition or so that his lies were in fact truth. He was self-delusional to a truly startling degree. It was simultaneously comical, fascinating and rather sad.

So Trump for example was probably outright lying the first couple times he said the election was stolen. But the mind of a narcissist is a tricky thing. I suspect he might actually believe it now, because doubling down on lies to the point of self-investment in them seems to be common with these cats.

Both impeachment trials failed because there weren’t 17 GOP senators willing to consider the evidence for five seconds. Neither they nor their constituents would have convicted Trump if he’d been caught on video handing Putin a stack of classified folders while simultaneously offering Georgia election officials a pallet of gold bars.

That said, I share your wish for more of the good stuff to be happening in prime time.

Odd. If you go to the Fox News website, you have to search really hard to find any news about the 2nd hearing. Almost like it didn’t happen.

You know what? I don’t give a crap if he “actually believes it”, now, then, or any other time. The shit he’s spewing is factually incorrect, and was used to try to overthrow the legitimately elected government of the United States. Even if he’s actually just fucking crazy, he should be in jail. The stakes are just that high.

In my view, it mostly will come down to how hard Fox “News” and their little clones push back against the Committee’s narrative and continue to support Trump. There’s more and more evidence that the unholy alliance between Trump and those propaganda outlets is unsticking.

Slowly, slowly, the Republican party is moving on and leaving Trump behind. They’re already sliding over to support DeSantis.

Much like Nixon’s approval ratings after the Watergate hearings, I expect those who continue to support Trump as the effects of the hearings wear on will melt away. Especially if (when) charges are brought.

No one likes to look like they’re backing a loser.

Well when it gets down to brass tacks, I don’t either, really. Anymore than I gave a crap when my ex-boss started believing his own ridiculous bullshit. But if the question is “how can this person keep straight-faced lying like a rug”, the answer might very well be they start believing their own lies as an ego-saving mechanism in their twisted little minds.

It’s like being mildly curious how a toilet works, but still just mainly being concerned with whether it flushes away your shit or not.

They were following in lockstep with McConnell. If he’d have said “I’m voting to convict”, 20 or 30 of them would have voted that way too.

Which really makes me doubt McConnell’s rep as a super-Machiavellian. You’d think he’d have realized that impeaching Trump and disqualifying him for future office would be the end of the Orange Menace. Not an immediate end, but within a couple years, Trump’s influence would have been largely gone.

Good point. Even if the election were actually “stolen,” you don’t get to hang the Vice President.

There’s a house down the road from me with a flagpole in front. The only flag flying is black, with a big block T in the middle, and the T is cut out from the stars and stripes.

That’s the level of sick devotion millions of Americans have to this slimeball. GOP senators voting to convict (with few exceptions) would have not only seen their careers end, they would have been putting their families in peril.

Had McConnell come out in favor of conviction, he would have lost his leadership.

Well, let’s say that the Democrats present a largely evidence free trial that gives some soundbites and nice sounding quotes but doesn’t really include anyone who knows anything or anyone who was close to Trump. The Senate listens to that and, subsequently, the Senate Republicans all vote against Trump.

40% of the country is still backing Trump - a man who is claiming that the establishment is conspiring together to oust him from power, because he was trying to take them down.

Which case, in the eyes of the general public, has been given the greater weight of evidence?

Which just proves that these people have no honor or courage. What Trump was doing, and is doing, is treason, and should have been treated as such, consequences be damned.
