Right, and bear in mind that Republicans are installing “big lie” believers as election workers, election certifiers, not to mention state secretaries etc.
It may well be too late for election integrity in the US.
But holding some of those at the top, who orchestrated the coup attempt last time, accountable is the best shot at dissuading future attempts.
Pssst! Donald! Ya know, as long as you don’t officially announce, you keep the option open to run third party and really stick it to those RINOs who won’t back you up…
Oh that would be cool. Trump can make a MAGA / “Truth” party for the faithful.
And the republicans can go back to at least Bush-era levels of sanity…which isn’t great, but at least there would be two political parties again.
Someone somewhere (not sure if it was in this thread or not) recently posted a link to a story that detailed out nicely how “Republicans had their shot a year ago at a bipartisan hearing but they (Jim Jordan maybe? Kevin McCarthy perhaps?) fucked it up, so this panel is what they get”.
My computer did a restart and I neglected to bookmark that open tab beforehand, and now I can’t find the story. If anyone else recalls the article that I’m referring to, I’d appreciate a little help in locating it again. Thanks.
Another way to look at it is: If you had a GOP-run house, fuggeddabout having hearings at all, and if you get a GOP-Presidency fuggedabout the DoJ doing squat and any respectable GOP Prez not pardoning every guilty insurrectionist, high or low, “so the country can put this long national nightmare behind us.” No, the only shot you get at pursuing this monstrous crime, in political terms, is if you have a D Prez and D-appointed AG AND a D-Congress. Which you now have. So these are the ONLY circumstances you will ever get anything resembling the rule of law. If you don’t prosecute Trump under these circumstances, you’re admitting that Yes, some people–GOP Presidents–are officially above the law.
While they would pardon the insurrectionists, it would not be to put “the nightmare behind us” but it would be to focus on the real criminals, Hillary, Obama, Biden, and the rest of the Democrats.
Expect House Republicans to do something to disrupt the hearings today — probably attempting to rush the committee room in protest. Trump will love it.
McCarthy. Detailed in this WaPo article from this morning (probably in other sources, too). When Nancy Pelosi refused to seat two Republicans who might have been subjects of the probe (Jim Jordan and Jim Banks) to the committee, McCarthy decided to instruct his entire caucus to not participate (though obviously, Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger have ignored this instruction).
They have to say that to avoid a lynching when they get home. I’m surprised they didn’t stress that they were subpoenaed, which would give them a little cover.
Dream scenario- Don the Con gets indicted, tried, convicted, and sent to prison for life.
Dream turns into nightmare- Jan 20, 2025 he is pardoned by President Desantis.
Certainly DOJ has seen enough to decide internally that an indictment is coming. But they need to make the case airtight and prepare to counter any defenses that may be raised. While I can appreciate that it takes time, it simply must be done before 2024.
If Georgia successfully prosecutes him, then he’d need a pardon there too. Which means we need a Democratic governor (or maybe a governor Raffensperger).
Yes ideally he gets prosecuted and convicted in GA as well as other states. Seems that every state that had the alternate elector plot (AZ, GA, MI, WI) could prosecute him as well.
I don’t think Raffensberger pardons him after the shit he tried to pull. He’s already survived the wrath of the MAGA crowd once, he has nothing to fear from them.
"The aide said that guys like me were “in what we call the reality-based community,” which he defined as people who “believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.” I nodded and murmured something about enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off. “That’s not the way the world really works anymore.” He continued “We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors … and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.”
Suskind, Ron (2004-10-17). Faith, Certainty and the Presidency of George W. Bush. The New York Times Magazine.
I think DeSantis runs on the platform of “Elect me and I’ll pardon DJT.” The MAGA crowd would crawl over hot coals and broken glass in the nude to vote for someone who makes that promise.
If Desantis is already President, then Trump is no longer of any value to him. In fact, Trump running around running his mouth off would probably be a problem for him. So, no upside, and large possible downside.
He might make noises about “Sending the issue to a committee to study the problem” just to keep the MAGAts quiet, but nothing beyond that.
