Jan 6 Hearings Follow-Along & Commentary Thread (Starts Jun 9, 2022)

Holy Shit, I was wondering about that when I watched him testify. Is nothing disqualifying to these people?

Being a Democrat

I wonder if he’s allowed to know how individuals voted. I’d be interested in knowing this fact too.

Sadly, I think it speaks to how successfully the propaganda networks have demonized “the Left.” Any Republican is better than an evil, bottom-feeding Dem.

Is Garland still watching with interest? When are arrests coming?

in pa at least 2 “dead” votes were for trump. one was son who registered his late mother to vote, and one was dead wife. they were absentee so easy to track.

History would say that unless they’re worried that Trump is going to try to flee the country, they’re going to wait until they’re good and ready and then knock on his door one morning.

At this point, I don’t see the path forward to Trump NOT getting prosecuted.

Agreed. For all the talk of unrest if they indict Trump, it will be just as bad, though more verbal than physical, unrest if they fail to indict him.

In addition to crossing his eyes and dotting his tees, I think Garland is stalling it off as long as humanly possible on the chance that Trump dropping dead of natural causes will remove the task from his to-do list.

I don’t think he’s stalling. I think he’s building his case in a classic RICO fashion. He’ll move when he’s ready to move, as @Sage_Rat points out.

It’s an unprecedented, enormous thing to indict a former president. Garland is a careful AG. He’s moving his way up the chain exactly as I would expect him to do.

I’m glad he’s careful. The longer he takes, the less time Republicans will have to coalesce around their New Anointed presidential candidate: DeSantis. Right now, they don’t know which way to jump, because Trump is still a huge factor with their base.

Republicans want Dems to take Trump out with an indictment. I say, what’s the hurry?

Thompson said the committee needs more time to go through the new documentary footage it received from documentarian Alex Holder, who possesses never-before-seen footage of Trump and his family, new information from the National Archives, and new tips coming in through the panel’s tip line since the hearings started in order to move forward with its hearings.

AKA, people are starting to flip on each other, after the news of actual behind the scenes film footage came out.

Unless they caught the fraudulent absentee voting before the ballot was removed from its envelope, they shouldn’t be able to tell how those votes were cast.

For what it’s worth…

My boss is running for congress. He’s a conservative Republican in a Florida district that has been gerrymandered to be red, but he’s in a tough primary fight.

And while he’s already a craven, hypocritical politician, at least privately he is not a Trump supporter (even while his signs identify him as a Trump Republican)

I haven’t spoken to him much lately, but he and I spoke today. I asked him if his party will implode when DeSantis and Trump go head to head for the presidency

Him: I don’t actually think Trump will run.

Me: Well, he belongs in prison.

Him: Well, we’ll see what happens with Georgia.

Me: It was a felony.

I know it’s just an anecdote, but I dare say some of this stuff is starting to seep through.

(Granted, it’s just so they can jump to another horrid leader, but I do think Trump is losing his shine within the party. Of course, it remains to be seen whether this will trickle down to the base, or how long that might take)

Time for an update,
“If you can convince the lowest Republican he’s better than the best Democrat, he won’t notice you’re doing nothing to actually help him. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets right into your campaign fund.”

I hadn’t caught up with this thread when I posted a reply a few minutes back in the NEW Stupid Republican Idea thread (in the Pit), but: yeah, this is basically the same idea.

It’s not just GOP voters who limit themselves to the right-wing media bubble; it’s a lot of their elected officials, too. And ‘Democrat = evil’ is very much the theme inside that bubble.

That is a profound summary of how the Southern Stategy morphed into MAGA over five decades.

This. NY Times had a oped piece a couple days ago how it’s so tough to be AG Garland and damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

The US either stands for

  • no one is above the law, including the President
  • There is such a thing as “facts” and “truth”
  • peaceful transition of power

Or it doesn’t. Not persucuting Trump is far far far worse than letting political divides fester. Fingers crossed the DOJ is getting ducks in a row and not compromised like special counsel Robert Mueller was. Mueller made his report, and then stood silently while Billy Barr ran wild with propoganda. And every other “adult in the room” waited until Trump is out of office and a book is on sale before standing up.

Not putting a stop to Trump doesn’t just open the door to more and worse crap-it rips the door off the hinges and puts up an ugly neon sign that says “YOUR CRAP WELCOME HERE!”

To steal and tweak a line from Walking Tall (NO! The original!)
If you let them do this and get away with it,
THEN YOU’RE GIVING THEM THE ETERNAL RIGHT TO DO THE SAME DAMN THING ANY TIME THEY WANT!

Sounds like a snappier slogan for the Statue of Liberty. Remember how fussed Republicans were about that plaque?
