Jan 6 Hearings Follow-Along & Commentary Thread (Starts Jun 9, 2022)

Cassidy Huchinson is 25!

I was definitely not together enough at that age to do one tenth of what she’s done. I’m very impressed.

I remember first hearing about the ‘you can’t answer any questions if you want to plead the fifth’ during the OJ trial. It was hard for the prosecution to come back from: “Did you plant the evidence in the truck?” “I plead the fifth.”

I hate to call ‘cite’, but I’ve never heard this. You invoke the Fifth in response to a question whose answer would incriminate you. Having answered one that wouldn’t make no sense as a precedent:

“Are you John Doe”?
“Yes”.
“Did you murder her?”
“I invoke the Fifth!”
“Sorry, too late, you answered one question, neener!”

Does it matter in what order the questions are asked?

“Were you in the room the decedent was murdered in?”
“I take the fifth.”
“What is your favorite color?”
“Red-- no, no! Blu-u-u-ue!”

Took him less time to respond to Cassidy Hutchinson than it did for him to respond to the rioters at the Capitol.

I just dropped in for a minute on Fox, where Bret Beier was talking to the anchor (whose name escapes me). Beier gave a pretty straight-forward assessment: that the details of Trump’s actions were the most compelling, and he described them as (I believe) “unhinged”. he did say that much of Cassidy’s story was second-hand, which was true.

The anchor then tried to tie it to Nancy Pelosi, naturally --like, if they knew in advance that it was going to be violent why didn’t Nancy beef up Capitol security.

I believe this bullshit talking point has been debunked over and over again, correct?

“As Speaker of the House, Pelosi does not direct the National Guard. Further, as the Capitol came under attack, she and the Senate Majority leader called for military assistance, including the National Guard.”

Cassidy Huchinson got rid of her Trump toady lawyer and got her own lawyer. So now she is no longer being directed what to say. That’s the new stuff, she wanted to speak more openly this time. And she literally took the gloves off and hit hard. :muscle:

No. But you do have to be careful not to answer something that’s going to constitute a waiver.

You called it right;

Headline now on Fox News website:
" [Trump lunged at Secret Service agent after being told he couldn’t go to Capitol on Jan 6, ex-aide says]

One would expect that she will also be called to testify in the DOJ’s hopefully upcoming criminal trial.

So you may selectively plead the Fifth, but if you answered the subject earlier then the Fifth would have been waived. If you are asked a question not relating to the waived subject, you can still plead. Right?

Wait, first he appeared to abandon his followers and let them go to the Capitol and face consequences for their actions all by themselves, and they did not care. So now it looks like he “tried” to go with them but was stopped, and now they are embracing him harder?

I thought there were different rules depending on where, or to whom, you are testifying. The “you answered one question, so you’ve waived the right and must answer all” is only for testimony before a grand jury.

To be fair, I am getting my information from an episode of The Rockford Files, so wouldn’t put too much faith in it.

Is it over for the day?

yes, they ended about 3pm eastern. on to next month.

Mick Mulvaney just jumped off the Trump train.

A MAGA doesn’t know that. And besides, it’s revenge.

The general BS account I hear is that Nancy (not sure why Mitch doesn’t get blamed as well) should have had more Capital Police on hand at the beginning. Not sure what the numbers were relative to total headcount, and of course I don’t think anyone really thought Trump was going to unleash a mob.

I was trying to balance my checkbook.
