Jan 6 Hearings Follow-Along & Commentary Thread (Starts Jun 9, 2022)

I’m still 30 posts behind in reading this thread, so apologies if this has been posted already:

Trump Social, that bastion of Free Spittle, banning users who dast post anything about last night’s J6 hearings:

Multiple users, apparently, are reporting this.

Censorship!!!

(I know, I know … IOKWARDI.)

FWIW—
I just checked and Trump’s tweets on Truth Social all seem to get anywhere between 25K and 40K likes. That’s all. It’s really lame.

Countdown to banning anyone who doesn’t like a Trump Spew within a specific time limit.

And how many of those paltry 25K to 40K “likes” are just bogus bots anyway, that exist solely to jack up the Unlikeable Master’s “like” counts?

You finally got into Truth Social? Is it finally fully functional?

@Ann_Hedonia , I don’t follow Twitter much so I don’t have any “gut feeling” for how many “likes” a “popular” tweety-bird would be expected to get.

Help relieve me of some iggorance here. I know Trump had a big following. How many “likes” did he typically get during his late unlamented days on Twitter?

Don’t remind me - I missed the premiere of 3 On a Match because the local NBC station actually aired it earlier than planned because of the hearings.

I assume somebody will want to charge Trump with “engaging in insurrection against the United States,” if for no other reason than to try to have him banned from becoming President (Section 3, 14th Amendment).

She’s probably kaput in Wyoming. However, if the Trump swamp fever mania breaks and mostly blows over in the foreseeable future, and more traditionally conservative conservatives become fashionable again, I could imagine that she could make a comeback elsewhere.

ETA: From what is publicly known about Liz (at least what I publicly know), she seems to be no chip off her corrupt old man’s block. Dick Cheney was a corrupt crooked slimebag, and unfortunately very adept at it too. Young Liz, as far as I know, hasn’t exactly followed in those footsteps.

Am I wrong?

That’s the best we can hope for afa trump is concerned. Wish it wasn’t so.

Bogus Russian bots, maybe?

It’d be nice if Wyoming voters, being a contrary bunch of cowpokes, are curious enough about what their sole Congressperson is doing to break through the media bubble and decide for themselves, and like her mix of down-the-line conservative views and stick-it-to-the-man independence, and re-elect her in a landslide. And Trump’s head explodes.

Fantasy, I know,

It’s in keeping with Fox News’ motto where I felt they leave off the second half.
Fair and balanced My ass

I’ve been looking at some YouTube clips of the Watergate hearings. There are, at least, some “interesting” comparisons to be made. Senator Sam, southern drawl and all, sure didn’t put anyone to sleep. He raked people over the coals with some of his questioning.

This is good news. I suspect more people will tune in when they read some of the fallout from the first hearing.

Though the Thursday night figure pales next to presidential debates (63 million to 73 million) or this year’s State of the Union address (38 million), it’s still much larger than the audience that would normally watch a daytime congressional hearing. And it’s in the ballpark of television events like a big “Sunday Night Football” game or the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

ABC attracted the biggest audience among the broadcast networks, with 4.8 million viewers. NBC and CBS each had an audience of more than three million. MSNBC had an average audience of 4.2 million, and CNN drew 2.6 million.

I remain stunned that it was Trump who inspired this kind of slavish devotion, leading people to put their health and freedom at risk, leaving aside all the professionals who destroyed their reputations for him.

Was it just that the conservative media machine finally became so effective that any Republican president during those four years would have received the same level of slavish devotion? Would people have been threatening to hang Mike Pence for Jeb Bush?

Or, was it Trump? He’s such a fucking clown, such an obvious con artist, that I just don’t get it. He’s no Kennedy or Hitler or Roosevelt or Stalin or whatever. I don’t understand a cult of personality forming around that ridiculous personality.

And that doesn’t even count us non-TV owners who went over to a neighbor friend’s place to watch!

Chaos was his name. Republicans, for many years now, have the been the Party Of No Government (or at least nothing bigger than you could drown in a bathtub), and Trump was just the fucking clown for the job!

And furthermore, the GQP for many years was the Party of Hate, Bigotry, and Lies, and Trump was just the Right Fucking Clown for that role too, at just the right time.

He was the Perfect Stormfront candidate.

I’ll be curious to see if there are any of these ‘grilling’ moments in the upcoming hearings. The Watergate hearings, as I recall, were not pre-staged. When John Dean read his 245-page testimony, I don’t believe anybody knew exactly what he was going to say. And I also seem to remember that he was the first to say that Nixon was taping those meetings in the White House.

It was Alexander Butterfield, not John Dean, who made the first off-hand, tangential, and utterly unscripted bombshell remark revealing the taping system. He was some relatively unknown, lower-level functionary who had been involved with setting up the taping system.

I didn’t hear any of that live, but I heard it played back on the news radio soon after. There was an audible gasp from the room when he let that slip.

ETA: Whereas, in the Trump White House, the only taping system was those National Archive guys, detailed to taping together the documents that Trump shredded. (And I suppose, hanging out to dry those docs he flushed.)
