It would send a message to other corrupt politicians that these things Simply Are Not Done.
It would lessen his political influence.
It would not necessarily bar him from office, so he could theoretically run from prison (and pardon himself from federal crimes if he wins). He has enough people in his thrall that it would split the Republican vote and make it easier for a Democrat to win.
Convicted. In prison he couldn’t hold rallies and his communications would be seriously impaired. Without the constant adulation of the insane, he would rapidly go downhill and spend the rest of his miserable existence clutching a toy cell phone and muttering “hamberders, hamberders…”
In fact, I want him convicted for State Offenses. Multiple states. State prisons are notably worse than Federal ones, and if he gets convicted in several states then a single governor can’t set him free.
I wonder if his DOJ indictment will help officials in other states grow spines and start charging him with crimes there – not only related to the Jan. 6 insurrection but other abuses of power committed while he was in office and financial crimes committed earlier. (Looking at you, New York.)
And lets hope a bunch of his cronies go away, too. The GOP has gotten away with “But what if we didn’t?” for decades, but let’s finally show them there’s one norm that cannot be violated. If you lose an election, you lose.
I think Fani Willis’s case in Atlanta will be filed soon. In a just world, it should result in a conviction. She’s got dead-to-rights evidence with that phone call.
Convicted, for all the reasons mentioned above, plus: Even the best Club Fed kind of prison would be absolute hell for him. Bad accommodations run by people he has no influence over, and rules he has to follow? Imagine the meltdowns he’d have, every single day.
Back in 2011, thanks to Proposition 14 being passed by the voters, California now has a top-two primary where for most offices the two candidates with the most votes, regardless of their party affiliation, face each other in the general election. This has had the effect of totally blocking alternative parties from the general election, but perhaps more importantly, at least twice, both candidates in a heavily-leaning district were not from the party the district leans towards.
The more recent one, this last June, in state senate district 4 (central Sierras) six Republican candidates failed to put-poll the two Democrats, despite a Republican-paid mail flyer meant to push one Democrat ahead of the other to the point the top Republican could squeeze by her for the second spot.
Sometimes, plans don’t work out the way you thought they would. Better to keep the bastard out of politics all together.
If only it was that easy, but not, it’s not. Now, if he was on 5th Avenue shooting people randomly he’d be guilty. (Though per his own words he would lose no followers.)
I’m not sure where this goes, but … Adam Kinzinger released an extremely Norman Rockwell-esque three minute audio tape of some of the phone calls that have been coming into his office since his participation on the J6C.
Meh. I assume most corrections officers are trumpers, or at least conservative. There would be at least one guard who would consider it their honor and privilege to serve Trump directly.
He’s been going after the low hanging fruit. Afraid to aim higher, but the hearings may be finally forcing him to act. He’s been pretty incompetent. He completely ignored the Meullar report.
Or…maybe start higher up like the committee has. Maybe Garland is just incompetent.
Things that happened after the committee started the public hearings.
My contrarian opinion, which is based on the accounts I’ve read of the jail experiences of white collar criminals like Bernie Madoff and Jordan Belfort, is that Trump will love jail.
Other inmates will be falling over him for the privilege of doing his laundry and covering his work assignments. They do this partly because the rich inmates can get good food and stuff, and partly because the white collar criminals that pulled off big crimes take on hero status. He’ll be the subject of almost universal unconditional adulation. Criminals hate “the system”, and Trump played and scammed “the system” like no one else in history.
And we all know he has no taste in food, he’ll probably like the overcooked institutional food better than the food served in the restaurants on his properties. He’ll be the King of the Prison. He’ll love it.
CNN just announced that. Given that the announcement was very recent (like, within the last fifteen minutes or so), I’d imagine that it will be all over every news source shortly.
