I just saw that Simpsons episode where Homer bungles a do-it-yourself backyard BBQ and the art world hails it as a brilliant example of “found art.” In a running gag throughout the episode, Jasper Johns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jasper_Johns) is always sneaking around and stealing things. Is this purely random, or some kind of art-world in-joke? Is Johns notorious for stealing other artists’ ideas? Or for stealing actual items of personal property?
I’m guessing people who know a lot about the Simpsons don’t know a lot about art.
Well, given that it’s Johns himself who does his own voice in that episode, I’m assuming the “stealing” motif is one that wouldn’t hit particularly close to home for him.
