Jay Mohr: Would someone please explain his appeal, 'cause I sure as hell don't see it

By my count he has been the star of 3 tv shows which bombed and were cancelled, he was horribly unfunny on SNL, and he seems to be a 25th rate Don Rickles type of comedian, which is to say that he sucks.

Am I wrong about this?

I’m not at all averse to mean or vulgar comedy, but Jay Mohr stinks. And he used to always put his unfunniness on full display when he showed up repeatedly on the now-defunct Opie & Anthony radio show. I agree: he’s awful, but inexplicably seems to keep finding work.

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: Jay Mohr is frickin’ hilarious. That show where he was a Hollywood agent… can’t remember the name of it off the top of my head, but I want to say Dragon. That show was one of the funniest, most original things I’ve ever seen on television. It was sheer genius. Of course, it was cancelled immediately, because that sort of thing really shows the holes in the rest of the network’s line-up, and it’s cheaper to kill the good shows than improve the mediocre ones.

Okay, yeah. That, and nobody watched it. But I like my first idea more.

Christopher Walken is our generation’s Jack Nicholson. Any comedian who does frequent impressions of him, regardless of how “dead-on” the impression is, should be immediately slapped with a certain level of Hack status.

That’s my main beef with Mohr.

Mohr’s show was titled “Action.” Despite a couple laughs I remember from that show, he still stinks. Maybe he just tries too hard.

I’ve always felt the same way. He must be related to someone.

Action was one of the flat out funniest sitcoms I’ve ever seen in my life. From the very first episode (pitching OJ Simpson belongs in the best sitcom scenes list. I should add it) to the end of the all too short run.
Outside of that, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him do anything funny. But that was hilarious.

Action was an absolutely hilarious show. And Jay Mohr has a lot of talent.

And what do you mean, unfunny on SNL? Did you ever see “Christopher Walken’s Psychic Friend’s Network”? One of the funniest things I ever saw.

“Why aren’t you calling? Todd Bridges will come to your house! Gary Busey is here. He suffered a massive head wound, and for what? For YOU?”

He’s kinda like the poor man’s Denis Leary. Younger, not quite as talented as an actor, not quite as funny as a comedian. But I’ll admit that both of them have a fairly narrow appeal. My guess is that if you like one of them, you’ll like the other.

WSLer, I couldn’t agree more. I, too, fail to see the appeal of Jay Mohr.

I used to find Jay Mohr mildly amusing. Then he made a guest appearance on a popular local sports radio talk-show here. In the course of the interview, one of the talk show guys threw out a line that was a kind of “in-joke” for regular listeners of the show. It wasn’t offensive or anything and it had nothing to do with Mohr, but it seemed to throw him off his rhythm a little. So the radio guy tried to explain that it was just part of their normal “shtick” and that is really wasn’t worth explaining.

At this point, Jay Mohr became the world’s biggest asshole. He began to belittle the radio host, making several very ugly comments about him. His attitude was, “How dare you try to be funny in the presence of ME! Don’t you know I am the comedian here?” He was very mean-spirited and bully-ish about the whole thing. The poor radio guy didn’t have a chance! And it was such an insignificant thing that started it all. Mohr just grabbed onto it, though, and used it as an excuse to show how “funny” he can be by verbally attacking and humiliating someone who was just trying to conduct a pleasant interview with him.

It’s the worst kind of humor, and if that’s all you’ve got…then you ain’t got much.

I didn’t find his Mohr Sports show to be all that funny. However, he occasionally calls in on the Jim Rome show and kills. But given that the Rome show can be heavily “smack-talk” oriented, Mohr’s brand of humor works well within that format. I guess it’s a very narrow niche to work within.

Mohr seems at his best, acting-wise, when he capitalizes on his unctuousness. He was terrific in the very funny Action and was quite effective and believable in Jerry Maguire. I never caught his SNL stuff and am not familiar with his stand-up shtick, but I always associated him with the guy you enjoy not liking.

He once sat in for Regis on “Regis and Kelly” and was fricking hilarious. I mean really funny. He is one of those guys who isn’t funny onstage as much as he would make you laugh if you hung out with him.

So, in other words, he sucks as a stand up comedian, but would be fabulous if he chose a career as a drunken heckler of stand up comedians.

Now I get it.
