"The Critic" Poll

Have you ever had a moment where you felt you were in that show? And by that show, I mean the show where Jay Sherman reviewed movies.

I had a “Critic”/Jay Sherman moment myself, at the end of the Stephen Spielberg biography on A&E. The guy was talking about SS’s new movie, Minority Report. Tom Cruise plays a police officer in the distant future, where cops are able to predict who will commit the crimes before they are committed, and arrest them in advance. Hearing him speak, I thought it sounded exactly like one of Jay’s snyposes. Ever had a moment like that?

Second part of my poll:

Your favorite little movie sketch on the show? Mine:

[li]The Jurassic Park sequel with that talking raptor.[/li]
[li]Speed 2- in which Keanu Reeves must read at a speed of over 50 words per minute.[/li]
[*]The Tea Cozy. Hilarious.

I saw a coming attraction for a movie called “Iron Monkey” which looked like a movie from the show. You’d have to see the trailer to understand though.

I love the Marlon Brando things they do:

*Apocolypse Wow!: The Musical
*The parody of the show Family Affair with Brando as the butler. The little girl goes, “Can you make a sandwich for my doll, Mrs. Beasley?” And Brando says, “Yeah, sure, that’s exactly what I want to do–make a sandwich for your stupid doll.”
*Brando playing Barney the dinosaur. “This is so humiliating.”

There were probably others with Brando, but those are the ones I remember.

*The parody of Rain Man with Raymond as a bat, I think. “Five minutes to The Munsters.”
*Chicken with Jack Nicholson. “Just for that, I’m gonna peck your walls out.”
*The Cockroach King with Howard Stern

Without a doubt, my favorite Critic moment is Marty’s karate lesson.

“Ah, Marty, your opponent will be Satoshi, the eater of souls.”
WHO HAS DISTURBED MY THOUSAND-YEAR SLEEP?!

That was beautiful, and Satoshi’s later appearances were even better.

Eating a cookie:
COOKIEPUS–I WILL EAT YOUR SOUL!

Playing the guitar and singing off-key:
BIG GIRLS DON’T CRY! BIG GIRLS DON’T CRY! BIG GIRLS DON’T CRY! AYE-AYE-AYE! THEY DON’T CRY!

(The bold italics were the closest I could come to portraying Satoshi’s voice here on the SDMB. Please don’t hold it against me.)

How about the foodfight in the U.N. School cafeteria? ONE stray piece of food lands on the French kids table, and they immediately stand up, raise their hands and scream “We Surrender!” Hilarious.

What always cracks me up (even just thinking about it) is Orson Welles saying the following:

“Rosebud frozen peas. Full of frozen goodness and green pea-ness.” (Or something to that effect.)

I think that’s from “The Critic,” though it could just be a fuzzy Simpsons memory. I think it’s The Critic, though.

Definitely a Critic moment.

Or Orson Welles as the host of the Sherman’s video will. “Mrs. (somethings) Fish sticks. Mmmm yes…they’re even better when you’re dead!”

Iron Monkey is actually a rerelease of an old Hong Kong action movie. I rented it from Hollywood Video over a year and a half ago. It’s pretty good if you like kung-fu movies.

My favorite Critic parody would have to be the Brown Acres for one inexplicable reason. It’s a parody of Green Acres set in Iraq. There’s one moment during the theme song that cracks me up for no discernible reason. When they’re doing the “shout out” part there’s one scene where they go “Fresh figs!” The next scene shows the Saddam guy giving a quick look around, then he shrugs and says to the camera “No pigs!” That “No pigs!” line made me laugh for ten minutes straight.

Has anybody watched the new Critic episodes they have over at shockwave.com? Definitely something to sooth your Critic jones.

Does everyone here know that there are new episodes of “The Critic” online? Try http://atomfilms.shockwave.com/af/animation/series/critic/

And from that same episode…

Doris Look Alike: ::puts on a smiley face paper bag over Jay’s head::

Jay: “Where’d you learn to do make up?”

Doris: “Iraqui soap operas.”

Segment of soap opera…
Man w/ smiley face bag: “How do I know he’s my son?”

Woman w/ bag, holding bagged baby (You know, you really had to be there…): “He has your eyes…and your smile.”

Great moment, but again, you had to see it. Gonna stay up late to see it, last night I can. for awhile. Ah, those carefree Sunday nights. <looks wistful>

Yeah, the online stuff is just as good. Did they really cancel the TV version? Do they not know that JON LOVITZ CAN DO NO WRONG? NONE, DO YOU HEAR ME? NONE!
Ahem. I’m sorry. Remember the Simpsons crossover? It was pretty forgettable until the end, when he suggested that the Simpsons visit his show. “Nah, we’re not gonna be doing that…” says Bart. Cheeky little scamp.

I once spent a drunken half hour trying to explain Mr. Pilkington the velociraptor to some (also drunken) friends. As it turns out, the humor doesn’t really translate when related in “No, you see, it’s funny because he’s a dinosaur with a pipe! And he’s really smart! Let me explain it again…” form.

I’ve probably seen every episode of this show ten times, and each one has three or four bits that still make me laugh out loud every time. Its cancellation(s) are just further proof that network execs are off their gourds.

Jay was on the Simpsons once, in a mental hospital.

I like the Easter Island kid.

I also liked the episode where Marty got elected class president and had to make the parade float by himself, and they winded up with a flaming horse’s ass.

I also like the episode where Duke ran for president, with June Lockhart as his running mate.

I thought it was a pretty good episode, but I can see why Matt G. wanted to take his name off of it, since he had nothing to do with The Critic. There were some good lines and funny moments, and Homer does something smart for once!

Smithers: Sir, the public sees you as something of an ogre.
Burns: Why, I ought to club them and eat their bones!

Besides the Orson Wells “fresh green pea-ness” joke, my favorite moment has to be when his sister is having her debutante coming out.

“Now we have a tricky situation. We gown-makers have a strict code of conduct about who gets to wear white. Will you be wearing virgin white or this slightly off-white color we call ‘whore white’?”

“White… (except the gloves)”

Probably butchered that, but you get the idea.

Also good was when Jay took the trucking job and his “How am I driving?” bumper sticker had the phone number to his own cell phone.

“He’s driving erratically, is he? Is he… swerving all over the road? Is he… throwing a vanilla milkshake out the window?”

Yeah, that was a good one, with the gloves. I also liked when Margo and Johnny Wrath were talking.

“Margo, when you’re ready, it will be a gift you give only to me.”
“And a gift you give only to me…right?”
“Uh…yeah.”

Oh wait, one more-
“Make way, I have something you will never have: talent.”
“Hey, it’s Jon Lovitz. I’d kill to have half his looks.”
“You do kind of sound like him.”
“Really?”

I thought the “Simpsons” “Critic” crossover was funny, and even though it offended Matt, I rather enjoyed, and still enjoy, it. I thought it was pretty ironic that the Simpson family basically thought Jay was this demigod, with his Pulitzers and his New York savvy, but in his show, he’s often reviled. Personally, I think Jay is very cool. I mean, I know the show played him as a loser, but look at the awards he’s won, the fact that he’s on TV, the fact that he’s an intelligent, sensitive guy, who does on occasion get laid. He’s an awesome dude.

Jay’s father has got to be the funniest character.

Franklin: I’ve taped the silverware to the ceiling so it won’t get stolen.

[Jay looks up and sees the silverware and a dog on the ceiling]

Jay: Dad, I understand the silverware, but why the dog?

Franklin: You understand the silverware? Cuckoo-cuckoo-cuckoo

“Take that Guernica!”

“Take that Birth of Man!”

<----------- Who onced used the “duketastic” word, “quizibuck” to describe a problem that I had, because I forgot that it was a fake word I’d heard it on The Critic.

[nitpick] I believe the term “hussy white” was used, I personally think “hussy” is funnier than “whore”. [/nitpick]

I can’t really remember anyt lines specifically right now, but I love this show, it’s hysterical. It seems like they only play 6 episodes on Comedy Central, and just rotate them, but I still really enjoy watching them.
