JD Vance Discussion Thread

Incidentally, Thiel was a closeted gay man in a heterosexual marriage for many years until Gawker outed him.

Note how he spells his name. A normal person would use “J.D.”, but he goes by “JD”. One must conclude that this is from the time he spent in the gay community, where he went by “Jadey”.

He might like a society wherein the women are completely covered, removing all temptation.

This commencement speaker said, in so many words, that women are nothing without having children. The most vicious feedback came from nuns, as one might imagine.

Well, as was discussed, that was at a Catholic university. So the outrage was mostly on the part of people who were NOT in the audience.

People are entitled to believe what they like, and attendees at a Catholic university likely agree with Catholic teachings, and if they don’t, maybe they should have attended some other university.

That is definitely not true for many Catholic universities, Jesuit and many La Sallian types, for example. Some of these guys are so tolerant of divergent viewpoints, they lose their “Catholic U” status. But there’s a wide spectrum of beliefs that won’t get you drummed out of the corps.

My Alma mater, a Catholic U, had a significant percentage of non-Catholics. That’s more a function of certain orders and institutions having centuries-old traditions of inclusion and outreach, especially directed toward the less advantaged. There are many Catholic orders that actually take Christ’s teachings seriously, and those teachings do NOT include othering anyone, and do include caring for the least of our brothers. You know, the woke ones.

Deleted. Total hijack.

One thing I notice is the media keeps calling all these weird, deeply misogynistic clips as being “recently unearthed”, as if they were from decades ago, in his youth. But they are recent clips, juat on obscure podcasts and shit. These are not things he thought years ago.

Did you miss the part about “The most vicious feedback came from nuns”? The nuns were, I suspect, somewhat more Catholic than average. So the intended audience.

Most of them do. But some, like that commencement speaker, just completely ignore Catholic values.

Would it be too subtle to only tell him “Nice beard.” in situations where he is in the presence of Mrs. Vance?

Probably too subtle. I for one have exactly zero idea what you’re signaling.

I got it.

That would sort of take the “universal” out of “university”. Right?

“University” and “universal” may have shared some Latin word origins centuries ago.

But universality is not a characteristic of modern universities and probably hasn’t been for a couple hundred years.

Or even then (says a woman).

Huh, @eschereal , a friend just texted that same image to me. Anyone know if it’s real, and if so, where?

I’m pretty sure it’s fake. But funny.

There are obvious cut and paste artifacts around the lower two signs.

I think they are editorial additions to a stock photo of a real “Now Entering Ohio” sign on a minor state highway.

ETA: the closer I look the more I think there are also C&P artifacts on the topmost sign.

Some Google image search suggests that most unadorned “Now Entering Ohio” signs are the standard green color of most highway signs.

And, like many states, Ohio has more elaborate signs on major roads that just happen to mention the Governor’s name in big writing. New sign welcomes drivers into Ohio, featuring slogan “Ohio, The Heart of it All.” (wkbn.com).
