JD Vance Discussion Thread

To guide them to the nearest sofa?

It’s an unanswerable question, but if Biden had done well in the debate and stayed in, would Vance be such an apparent loser of a candidate? Or is it the contrast with Harris and Walz that really drives it home?

I think he’d still be on the losing end of comparisons to Dan Quayle, but maybe he wouldn’t be at the couch fucker level. But all his nonsense about women and what not would still be out there, and in an election where abortion was always going to be a major factor, there was no way all of that would have stayed under the radar.

I think, and I’m only guessing here because I’m wary of the potential brain damaged of trying to hard to think like a MAGA. That this is an offer to help all of the childless cat ladies with their problem. Because the only reason for a woman to be childless is because she doesn’t have access to a real man.

There’s a chance that these fans of Vance thought it was funny shade to throw at IVF, which would be extra offensive. Weird AND gross! But they do like offending people.

Speaking of taking offense, thanks to @Nicest_of_the_Damned for pointing out that the Swiss cheese thing was no big deal. One of the things I appreciate about this place is that it isn’t an echo chamber: people still care about what’s true. Hence why so many of us despise the venal self-dealer.

So I’ve seen a lot of Vance clips on the YouTube political channels, and my observation about Vance is that… he’s improved somewhat.

Sure, he’s still odious, oily, and evil, but I think he’s now able to convey that fascist talking points with a little more confidence and less awkwardness. He pretty much processes any question with the “say ‘look’–pause–dodge” approach–but that’s what he was hired to do! I would also add that Vance has been a good lapdog for Trump and has been pretty darn effective at letting criticism of himself roll off his back.

So I’m a bit less confident that he would be destroyed by Tim Walz in a debate in the way that Biden was destroyed by Trump (which was being destroyed on the basis of speaking competence and, well, life force and not on content). Vance would just grease himself up, avoid saying anything of substance, and just get through it. Tim Walz would win, mind you, but I don’t think it would be as entertaining as it would have been a couple weeks ago.

What hasn’t changed is that Vance is a highly unpopular figure, and his polling remains disastrous. I think he is a genuine drag on the ticket.

I think the chance that Trump replaces him at this point is approximately zero. Trump does not even seem to be running his campaign; rather, the campaign is running him–and doing a very poor job. Trump is too nuts at this point to make any decisions of his own.

I think that Trump is frustrated, because for the first time in his life, he’s actually got to work at something to get what he wants. He’s lived a life of unearned privilege, and even in the 2016 election, he didn’t really “work”, since he didn’t really want to win. He just got up on stage and told lies and called Clinton names, and basked in the adulation of the crowd. That isn’t work to him.

But now? He’s facing an opponent who he actually needs to beat, and he has no idea how to do that, and hard work is entirely foreign to him.

Correct!

Moreover, he’s not just failing to do the right things; he’s actively self-sabotaging. If he were just to keep calm and campaign normally, he would significantly improve his chances of winning.

If I recall correctly, Walz’s children were conceived through IVF, which he’s never made a secret of, so this was a (stupid, futile) way for MAGAts to say Walz isn’t a Real Man like Vance.

Last night at the DNC:

“J.D. Vance, do you understand why there was a sudden job opening for running mate on the GOP ticket? They tried to kill your predecessor.”

– Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD)

And he said once, JUST ONCE, that he wanted abortion criminalized, and he wasn’t running as a Democrat. Those are the only things some people need.

I certainly doubt that Trump supporters even think of the possibility of JD becoming President due to any kind of necessity. I don’t think that any major DJT supporters think Grumpy Trumpy is less than invincible. JD is just a placeholder.

This probably goes in the Schadenfreude thread, but it applies here too.

The “crowd of TENS” was in Kenosha.

What kind of car did JD buy?

“Thanks to Kamala Harris’ spending policies, the average price of a new car costs nearly $50,000 a year,” Vance said

And most of them were security agents.

ISTR that Hillary Clinton drew similarly sized crowds.

Gee… Who could that friend be? … Who does Vance know that embellishes and lies a lot? … Hmmm…

One of the responses in that article:

“I can’t imagine there was any handler who told him it was a good idea to say he’s friends with liars in an attempt to poke Walz. No one can be that stup-- god, look who we’re talking about,” Cannon laughed.

One can only hope this is the straw that lights trump’s famously short fuze.
