OK, after 2 kids in 3 years, I have the hips of a Mom. I’m not hugely overweight (10 lbs, give or take, and I’m working on that), but I’m having a hell of a time finding jeans that fit and flatter what can only be called an hourglass shape but that don’t look like dorky Mom Jeans.
Gals with hips, what are you wearing these days? Bonus if they come in petite lengths, as I am fairly short as well. I know this is all subjective and will still require the dreaded trip into the dressing room (complete with 3-way mirror and bad lighting), but some directions to start in will be helpful.
Ophrah had a special on different jeans-types for very different figures. The right jeans made an amazin gdifference, and they had them for all figures!
I looked on Ophrah.com too see if I could find it, but the show was probably a rerun from a few months ago, so no luck.
I do well with the Gap Original Boot Cut jeans. (Size 14 if anyone cares) So yes, I do have hips. I find while the zipper is short, it’s not the 12 foot zipper of mom jeans - lol And they come in regular, tall & ankle length, I believe.
So do Gap Curvy jeans, which my waist to hip ratio loves. Perfect rise (about an inch below the navel), and no big gap between the jeans and the small of my back!
Try something with a slight flare. Not so much that they’re obviously flared pants, but just so they don’t taper towards the bottom which to me is the ultimate sign of mom jeans (straight-cut legs still look narrow at the bottom, I find).
I stick with either Lee Riders – the “casual” cut, i.e., the one that’s fuller in the hips/butt – or plain Old Navy. Never been disappointed with either of them.
I was going to say Gap too.
It’s where we finally got my mum (a mother of 3 and a lady in her fifties) a pair of jeans that didn’t scream either “I’ve given up” or “I’m wearing my daughters’ clothes!”.
If you’re interested in “names”, I’ve been pretty happy with Polo jeans. I’m 5’2" and their “short person” versions seem to be pretty flattering.
Don’t try Hilfiger, I’m mad at them. I bought a pair of their jeans in my size and they were freaking huge. Don’t try to tell me that a 130 lb 5’2" woman is a frickin’ size 6. Never in my life have I been a six. Went through a HUGE hassle to try to return them; I was convinced they were mislabeled. Contacted company via email, response was really cruddy, I don’t like their reps.
Ended up @ Macy’s to return them and got a crappy $14 credit on a $50 pair of jeans. I tromped right over to the Polo section and found my size easily.
Now if they could just get rid of those “ultra-ultra low rise” jeans! You know the ones; they induce the “dunlop” phenomenom. If I wanted my butt crack to show in my jeans I’d be a stinkin’ plumber.
Ah, see, that’s exactly what I’m looking for. Jeans that fit my hips generally have too much space at the small of my back. And an inch below the navel is just fine. I have a pair of Levi’s that my pre-baby body loved, but now the waist seems too high and Erkel-like.
I had actually given up on the Gap. I went there about 2 years ago and was completely depressed that I had somehow aged and sized so far out of their demographic. Good to know that I can look there again, because I like the convenience of their online ordering and return policies.
Any particular style? I tried on 2 pair yesterday. The “kelly” (I think) didn’t fit in the least (and almost made me cry) and the “Saturday” in the exact same size were too big around the waist but fine in the hips.
The whole size thing befuddles me anyhow. How I can be such disparate sizes in the same brand is beyond me. I know the whole “slim fit” versus “relaxed fit” versus “ain’t never gonna fit” has a lot to do with it, but some consistency would be much appreciated.
Maastricht, I did find something on the Oprah website about that show, but they only gave brands which would be flattering to the different body types, not specific style names and numbers within those brands.
Anyhow, thanks, everyone! As soon as my self-esteem can withstand the inevitable beating, I will head back to the stores.
I have the opposite problem – no hips, not much butt. So I feel comfortable recommending Land’s End jeans. Their “regular” fit has extra space in hips and butt, and they also have a relaxed fit and a classic fit and a slim fit, etc. And you choose the length. They’re super with returns too.
I love Land’s End. They’re the only place I can buy knits that don’t lose their shape after a wash or two, and the jeans last forever. You’ll be sick of them long before they’re frayed at the cuffs.
Wow, it’s amazing what you women have to go through to find jeans that fit. I’m probably quite a bit pickier about jeans than most guys, but I have my brand and styles that I like, and I can always rely on them.
For me, jeans are jeans. I prefer Ralph Lauren jeans. I’m hard on pants, and the denim seems to be of a better quality, a bit more durable. The pairs I have now have been with me for almost three years, but I’m a guy, so almost anything will work.
I used to wear Gap jeans until I crept up from the 12-14 range into the 14-18 range. But I have found that Eddie Bauer makes jeans of a similar ilk to all kinds of odd middle-aged body types-- they look like the Gap jeans of a couple of years back. I am pleased with them.
You beat me to it. I love express jeans, with so many different styles you are guranteed to find something. They have low rises if thats what you like, or higher ones. I have plenty of hip and thigh, and have my choice of styles.
