I stopped at the Gap today to check on a cheap sweater for sale. They didn’t have the sweater, so I tried on a few jeans from the sale rack. Thats when I discovered their new jean sizes.
Buying jeans is always a huge pain in the butt for me. I’m a size two everywhere- except my hips, which are a size 10. I’m not a large girl, but I always have to buy these elephantine jeans just to get them around my hips. It doesn’t help that I’m long waisted and have short legs. When I do find jeans that fit, I’m always swimming in them and they fall to a puddle on the floor. It feels pretty dumpy and unattractive. My recent trip to Old Navy, in which I tried on eveyr pair of pants in the store, yielded three purchases, all of which had to have a good five inches hemmed off of them.
But now the Gap has introduced “curvy” jeans. These fit over my hips without sagging at the waist. They fit my thights perfectly. They also come in “ankle” lenth, which means the fit my just perfectly. I feel sexy and cute in them. It’s awesome.
Now here came the hard part. They were like $70.00. I’m usually a thrift store shopper and a cheapskate. That is a fortune to me- like several weeks of groceries. But it’s worth it to have a pair of jeans that fit. Thats a once-in-many-years proposition for me.
The lady rang them up. They came to $10.00.
What??? I said.
She said they were ten dollars again. I wasn’t going to contradict her a second time.
It’s great to find a place that has clothes that feel like they’re made for you. I have the opposite problem as you. I’m 5’10" and slender. American Eagle has the perfect jeans for me…size 8 long in stretch denim. (I love stretch denim!) If I could find them for $10.00 that would be a big bonus.
The sister of one of my friends was selling sweatshirts a few years go. She used the same font as on Gap sweatshirts, only they said CRAP. (I guess she didn’t like The Gap.)
When I was in high school there was a girl who was very, very skinny and who wore very, very tight jeans. Behind her back she was known as The Gap because of the space between her thighs.
There used to be a clothing store (I don’t remember the name) that sold ‘adventure-themed’ clothing. Cargo trousers, jungle-y shirts, etc. Their stores had faux bamboo and crates and whatnot as decoration. I liked their clothes, but they were bought by The Gap and they ended up with basically the same styles as The Gap. Too bad. I really liked thier stuff.
That’d be Banana Republic. I certainly didn’t love the safari stuff (not my thing), but I’m not sure the new motif (just like the Gap, only more expensive!!!) is an improvement.
even sven, I *love * the Curvy jeans. I’ve always had the same problem you do (albeit on a larger scale!). Size 14 ass, size 10 everywhere else. It’s no nice to have jeans that don’t have that three inch gap between the small of my back and the waist of the jean.
GAP jeans last almost forever or at least 5 years, so they’re good.
I also love stretch denim and have fit problems. I have size 6 (maybe 8) legs and thighs, but have a size 12 hips. I routinely can grasp large handfuls of fabric around my thighs, but have the waistband be tight.
I will try the new curves–I am due for a new pair of jeans. Thanks.
Wow. I’m 5’9" with a 32" inseam, and I curse the days when cuffed/dragging-on-the-ground long jeans are in because the long jeans get snapped up too quickly.
even sven, maybe that was a pair that should’ve been on the clearance rack and got missed? Either way, nice score.
??? I am 5’11" and 34" inseam, GAP long jeans fit fine, plently of length. But if you want even longer, sometimes on their website I can find jeans that come in extra-long, and those are the first jeans I ever had to have shortened. Those jeans were so long they came down all the way over my feet and I was walking on them even in heels.
GAP jeans do last forever, I have pairs from college (going on 7 years ago) that I still wear.
The $10 probably was not a mistake, GAP jeans get marked way way down all the time. I never pay full price for them, I usually get them for about $20. Banana Republic too, shop their clearance rack, their turnover rate is very fast and it will get marked down eventually if it doesn’t sell out. Here are some X-long jeans for $19.99. Ok, so they are only left in size 0-2, but keep checking around, I’ve see jeans in sizes 4-16 too.
Indeed, seeing as they were so inexpensive, I hope you picked up a couple of extra pairs.
I like GAP’s stuff quite a bit…especially the the T-shirts and sweaters. The jeans are OK, but I find they run a little short in the inseam and a little bit bigger in the waist. For example, as I type this I’m wearing their Boot Fit Cords, and though I normally take a 32 waist, these are 31 and fit fine. On the other hand, while on all my other jeans, 32 is plenty long for the inseam, these are just a tad short. I’ll have to get 33s next time, if they have them, or 34.
I like them, though. They look OK for the office and feel like jeans, even though they’re not denim.
