JED: (Proudly) That boy takes to cipherin’ like a mule takes to millet!
That sounds about right.
Green Acres also had Arnold Ziffel the pig. Arnold was probably the funniest tv animal ever. Why doesnt modern tv have any funny animals?
Also while Lisa was often shown being somewhat dim witted, sometimes she also really shown thru. Take the Season 1, episode 7 "Neighborliness" where Oliver needed his field plowed but his tractor didnt work. So he came up with the idea of holding a plowing contest to get neighbors to come plow his fields.
Well he told Lisa she would have to cook for everyone so Lisa came up with the idea of holding a fried chicken cooking contest and she gave away their fancy new couch as first prize.
Also while Mr. Haney could pull a scam on Oliver, he never could on Lisa.
Kellogs Corn Flakes was a sponsor.
So was Winston cigarettes.
Jethro knew his gazintas too! 2 gazinta 4 2 times, 3 gazinta 9 3 times, etc.
Thanks for that stroll down memory lane. I saw it when it first aired. Soon, I’ll be turning into oil.
I loved how Arnold could grunt in seven languages.
One time, Oliver needed to get his produce to market but his truck broke down. The rubbery sheet left over after Lisa cut out her hotcakes on the griddle made the perfect headgasket for fixing the engine.
Not to mention all the money the Howells brought with them.
My astronomy professor loved telling the same joke!
Since no one else has supplied it yet, I feel compelled to present the X-rated version of the song.
Come and listen to my story ‘bout a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer barely kept his family fed
Then, one day while a fuckin’ Ellie Mae
Out of his cock come a bubblin’ spray…
Semen that is - spunk, jism, San Francisco tea
Well, the first thing you know Ellie Mae’s a gettin’ fat
The kinfolk said, “Jed, take a look at that!”
They said, “an abortion is the thing you ought to do”
So, he got a wire hanger and some Lysol too.
Well, enclaves are popular in my area and not just for the rich.
You can get a place at The Enclave Apartments for $795 a month which isn’t too upper-crusty sounding. There’s also The Enclave Condominiums or simply The Enclave, not to mention a bare-bones apartment complex for the frugal, which lacks air conditioning and is called “The Autoclave”.
I don’t know if the “Green Acres” producers acknowledged it, but the premise is a reworking of the movie “The Egg and I”.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0039349/reference
So, maybe the Green Acres crew were able to hit the ground rolling.
The next thing you know Abdul’s a billionaire
His clan folk say “Abdul, move away somewhere!”
They say “Californee, you really should be there”
So he loaded up the camel and moved to Belair!
Swimming pools, movie stars, Jews.
The Belairabs!
According to Wikipedia, Green Acres was adapted from a radio show called Granby’s Green Acres. The radio show aired a couple years after the movie The Egg & I was released, so maybe the radio show was inspired by the movie, although Wikipedia doesn’t mention it.
That was Uncle Joe’s idea.
Also, in some episodes, at least, Lisa’s father is the deposed king of Hungary. Her backstory is a bit inconsistent, though.
As an aside, Green Acres has a great example of sneaking stuff past the censors–Lisa of course is always using mispronounciations and malaprops, and was always a bad cook approaching Ellie May levels. So in one episode, she is complaining about how Oliver hates her cooking and mentions her “stupping” (instead of “stuffing.”) Oliver replies “I’ve always liked your stupping!”
(The show is currently airing on MeTV so I’ve seen a lot of it recently.)
IIRC from some of the early episodes it was sort of implied that Jethro’s mom, cousin Pearl, was who really pushed Jed to move. I believe she had plans for her son and possibly tagging along in the end.
More than implied. See #7. A good part of the first episode was taken up by Pearl trying to convince Jed to move.
I don’t think you’re picking up what I’m laying down.
Also, she consistently called Hooterville Hooters-ville.
