Without putting in any sort of spoiler, I’ll just say that the person in 3rd place going into today’s FJ made an incredibly stupid wager, and it cost that player the game.
This.
OK, it’s late enough in the day, so here’s what happened in today’s FJ.
Going into FJ:
Challenger Devin had $20,600
Champion Deb had $18,800
Challenger Ben had $4,400
Note that if either Devin or Deb answers the question correctly, Ben has no chance of winning. Thus, his only hope is that they both miss, and both bet big.
Indeed, that’s what happened. Deb missed, and bet it all, ending up with $0.
Devin missed, and bet $19,400, ending up with $1,200.
Ben should have bet little or nothing. Had he done so, he wins. Instead, he bet $4,399, missed, and ended up with $1. That was good for second place, but he could have won the game.
The worst bet in my opinion was second place. If the first place winner gets it right she loses. So all she needs to do is bet enough to beat his current score. That way no matter how much the third person bets she will still have more than double his money. In any scenario where the first place person gets it wrong, she will have the most money no matter what happens with second or third place.
In other words, if Deb had bet $1801, she would have won.
Deb’s preferred pronouns apparently are they/their, based on how Ken referred to Deb.
ETA: I agree with the comments about the betting mistakes.
It is not that cut and dried. It depends on the leader’s wager amount.
mmm
Of course, someone unsure of a category may make a relatively small bet, but there’s no way to know, and one has to assume that first place will always bet to cover second place’s best outcome.
Agreed, just wanted to clarify.
mmm
Did the contestant who answered the question about the show ‘New Girl’ respond with just Deschanel? It sure sounded like it, and it seems with 2 acting sisters you should name which one. I was trying to think if it was Zoe or Emily as the person responded.
Yes. Only “Deschanel.”
TV for 800:
It’s Zoe* (Emily was on “Bones”), and I agree. This seems like one of those cases where a “Be More Specific” should be mandatory.
*And it’s actually spelled Zooey.
I wrote out Zooey and thought “No, that can’t be right”.
Zooey and Emily’s mother, Mary Jo Deschanel was also an actress.
Their father is Caleb Deschanel, a cinematographer with six Oscar nominations.
There’s a book by J.D. Salinger called “Franny and Zooey”. Perhaps that’s where they got this spelling.
I thought the question on Emily Dickinson was hard. Didn’t get it but neither did any contestant.
The only Emily Dickenson quote I know, so I got it.
Am I the only one who thought Devin’s white turtleneck (?) looked like a buzzard costume without the wings?
Thought of William Shakespeare when I saw it.
I’m not judging, but IMHO this line (Hope is the thing with feathers) is among her most famous, right behind “Because I could not stop for Death he kindly stopped for me.”
Personally I am not a fan, but I seem to be in the minority.
Agreed, I know the quote. But in the moment I could not recall that; which is not so unusual in Jeopardy!
