Holy smoldering crawdads! I had no idea!
I want to politely further generalize this polite generalization of my polite complaint.
My pet peeve about this whole damn* board is when people talk about how things are “here” without mentioning so much as the continent on which they live, much less the country, state/province, or city.
We can’t read your minds, people!
*Oops. Maybe that wasn’t so polite. Sorry.
Jeopardy airs at 4:30pm in Hawaii (which is either 9:30pm or 10:30pm ET, depending on the time of year since Hawaii never changes its clocks.) I simply don’t have time to log onto the Board anymore during the week, so no one is spoiling anything for me.
I was gobsmacked that all three contestants thought, or were at least hoping, that just because it contained the word “water,” Waterloo was a naval battle. Sure, it was probably desperation and grasping at straws, but really, all three? I knew it was Trafalgar but could not for the life of me think of the name Trafalgar. Could even picture the location on a map in my mind, but the name just would not come. The battle was such a big deal because it marked THE end of the French navy, which was not that great to begin with. A full 10 years before Waterloo. Napoleon was a badass on land, but not so much on the water.
It could also be just that it’s the most famous battle associated with Napoleon, who you would think of when talking about 19th century French battles. It honestly seems to me like a lot of Jeopardy clues are solved by making jumps like that, rather than the contestant actually knowing all the information in the clue.
I get Jeopardy at 8:00 pm my time (Mountain, because I am in Alberta, Canada). My cable provider gets me American networks from Spokane, Washington, so while it airs on NBC in Spokane at 7:00 pm Pacific time, I get it at 8:00 pm Mountain time here in Alberta. In other words, at 10:00 pm Eastern.
I’ve learned not to touch this thread until after I’ve seen today’s show, because as sure as pigs is pigs, somebody in the Eastern time zone is going to spoil it for me.
Maybe, but why on earth would an admiral start a land battle? (Plus Waterloo was not at all over that quickly.)
As I speculated, it’s possible for a person (raises hand) to have the only thing they know about Waterloo be that it was the battle where Napoleon was decisively defeated, and thus while they don’t think Waterloo involved naval combat, they can’t rule it out for sure.
I’m sure I’m once again revealing myself to be a dunce on the level of someone who doesn’t know the significance of December 7th, 1941, but I had never heard of the Battle of Trafalgar. I had heard the word “Trafalgar,” and had heard of Trafalgar square, but had no idea what its significance was. I would never have come up with the Battle of Trafalgar no matter how much time I had.
February is the cruel month. Serves me right for listening to that Mr. Elliot.
I’ve seen Jason and the Argonauts more times then I can count, but it was no help. But I somehow pulled the right answer out of … thin air just at the buzzer.
I blew it on that one when my brain stalled out between C&P and the yoked brothers Kleobis and Biton who were from Argos
Quoting a post from just a few days ago.
Don’t unblur you haven’t seen the 6/6 show yet:
Did it seem to you as if Ryan just gave up in Double Jeopardy, like he was tired of playing? He had a little run at the end that brought him closer to the other two players, but he seemed to have lost the spark. Maybe it was just bad categories for him, but he seemed strangely apathetic.
Also, if he had wanted the best chance of winning, he should have bet nothing in FJ, not all but $1. The other two had to bet high against each other, and if Eric (the winner) had got it wrong, Ryan would have won with a bet of 0. As it was, he came in third, when he could have been second.
Well, he was a good champion, more likeable and less quirky than some (NTTAWWQ), and we’ll see him again in the TOC. However, I suspect that his relatively cautious betting strategy will not serve him well in the tournament.
I agree, he seemed lethargic. Maybe he was just tired!
It was a Monday, so the first game taped in the morning. Maybe he had gotten a poor night’s sleep?
Eric seemed really fast on the buzzer though, so maybe it was just that. Ryan never showed much emotion when he was winning, so it’s not surprising he didn’t show much when losing. Really good run though; I liked him a lot.
Tangentially Jeopardy related, but still…
Kelly Miyahara, former member of the “Clue Crew,” appeared as a contestant on The Weakest Link yesterday (June 6). I won’t spoil how it went, in case anyone wants to watch it.
Absolutely correct. I was somewhat shocked when I saw his wager.
I was also somewhat shocked when somebody got the right answer. I was, per usual, totally clueless regarding Greek mythology.
Going into yesterday’s round (6/6/2022), Ryan had winnings of $299,400. As the third-place finisher yesterday, he received $1,000. So are his winnings now $300,400? Or is the consolation prize not counted toward his total winnings?
J archine does have:
Season 38 16-time champion: $299,400 + $1,000.

Brian
p.s I fair amount of Greek Mythology, (though it has been a long time since I’ve watched the movie) but I couldn’t think of any Argonauts other than Jason
I don’t know anything about the Argonauts, but I guessed Castor and Pollux just because they were the only brothers I could think of from Greek mythology.
The Final Jeopardy clue for 6/7 was insanely difficult.
They wanted the title of a bestselling book from 2013 without any additional info, like whether it was fiction or non-fiction?
Seriously, they could’ve named the author and I’ll bet nobody still would’ve guessed the right book.
