Jeopardy discussion

I could have sworn there was a recent Wide Sargasso Sea-like feminist revision book titled The Wife of Bath

…was it The Good Wife of Bath?

That’s it, but the dates wouldn’t have matched the Jeopardy! clue (6/7)

The tipoff for me was “the first section.” Multi-section poem, circa 1313 … hmmmmm …

(ETA: The Canterbury Tales were written about seventy years later.)

Yeah, I decided to award everyone who said “The Handmaid’s Tale” one half point. Including myself.

I didn’t get it but my wife did. If they had added that the author was Dan Brown (plus poem from the 1300s), I would have considered it a spinning slam dunk.

Seems to be a recurring thing for the recent multi-week winners. to my eye - Matt seemed to me to give up about halfway through his run (though he got his energy back when he continued winning), and Mattea seemed to be actively sabotaging herself in the last few, like she just wanted to go home after getting into the top 5.

The only 13th century poem I could think of was Dante…but I never made a connection with Dan Brown. I wonder if I wrote “Divine Comedy” they would have given me credit?

I’ve heard of “The DaVinci Code” of course, but I couldn’t tell you the names of any of the sequels of you gave me 1000 guesses.

They could’ve said “A novel by Dan Brown” and I’m not sure I would’ve come up with the title….and I read the book!

Jeopardy! fans have started to speculate that the show’s bosses may be on the verge of finally announcing a new permanent host, after sharing what they believe are clues that the coveted post has been filled.

Jennings shared some details on a June 2 episode of his podcast, Omnibus, that would indicate he is returning to the famous Jeopardy! lectern for Season 39.

In an unexpected moment, the revelation was made during a conversation about Jennings’ appearance, when his podcast co-host, musician John Roderick, remarked: “I’ve never seen a picture of you where your hair went over your ears.”

“It’s very short right now, but this is calculated,” responded Jennings, who is also a Jeopardy! consulting producer. “I need to be on TV in exactly three weeks.”

“You do a thing where you putt over, counting on the ball to spin around and get in the hole?” Roderick asked Jennings about his precise timing.

“Yeah, like I’m playing 4-D chess every time I go get a haircut,” said Jennings. Because I’m going to be on TV in three weeks but they’re not going to cut my hair for it, which means I have to have it the exact right length. But a month thereafter, I’m going to be on… I’ve got to do Jeopardy! again, but they will trim it that day. So then I can get back down. There’s a lot of math that goes into this."

Details of the audio clip were swiftly shared on Reddit, where Jeopardy! fans pointed out that since filming has wrapped for Season 38, it’s a sure sign that Jennings will return—and a probable sign that he is the new permanent host.

Oh, and here’s a nice piece by Ryan Long.

Quite so.

And the Final Jeopardy clue for 6/8 was insanely easy.

I was shocked when one contestant missed it.

I suspect that for many of us, when we tried to think of a poem from 7 centuries before 2013, the first thing that came to mind was The Canterbury Tales, and then even when we realized that couldn’t be it, were just unable to get our minds off The Canterbury Tales.

I mean, I spent 30 seconds trying to think of whether the “first section” of The Canterbury Tales actually had a formal title, and whether there might have been a bestselling book with the same title. Prologue? That can’t be it. The Knight’s Tale? Well, I don’t pay much attention to contemporary fiction; I guess there could have been a recent bestselling book called The Knight’s Tale

I couldn’t get my mind off of Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came - and I totally knew that was wrong in so many ways!

I liked that article by Ryan Long. He’s just a regular guy! (No weird mannerisms.) I wish him all the best. Wouldn’t it be wild if he won the ToC?

I’m afraid he might not be of the caliber of some of the other recent champs.

He is however, by far the most likeable person to appear in a long time. Contestants and hosts alike.

Yeah, we all liked Ryan! He ought to be able to crush Mattea at least.

Yeah, I admit, I didn’t care for Ryan at first, but he grew on me throughout his run. It was nice to see a rideshare driver spanking all these Directors of Global Strategic Analysis Operations with their Georgetown masters degrees.

“This 2013 bestseller shares its title with the first section of a poem from 7 centuries before”

The Handmaid’s Tale came out in in 1985! It was made into a movie in 1990. No one seems to remember it, though.

Yeah, the half point is for effort, and because I don’t care for Dan Brown. :innocent:
