Jeopardy discussion

The host often says that spelling doesn’t count, but apparently penmanship does.

If the two nonwinners end in a tie, how do they determine who gets $2000 and who $1000? Or do they just give them both $2000?

Then there was the contestant who misjudged the age of the leaning tower of Pisa.

I believe whoever was leading prior to Final Jeopardy gets second place.

I was rolling on the floor laughing.

mmm

I can’t provide evidence, but to the best of my recollection, the player closer to the host wins ties. (Why? I don’t know. Third base.)

No, it’s assumed that she did not finish writing her response within the 30 second time limit. Which is the rule, and always has been.

Exactly right.

Now, had she written ‘Who is Tubman?’, she would have finished in time and her answer would have been accepted as correct.

I believe it was the timing of the daily double, wasn’t it back to back?

No, the comment was about the fact that Mayim sort of giggles every time she says, “It’s a Daily Double,” as though she’s surprised, or thinks it’s funny. It’s a mannerism that many find annoying.

I guess this is a reasonable explanation, although it seems a shame that Sadie lost because of it.

Another example of why you should never give more information than the minimum required to be ruled correct.

I don’t even understand why the audience claps. Uncovering the clue isn’t an accomplishment, but answering correctly is.

I know in many (most?) cases, an ambiguous answer will get a “be more specific” during J/DJ. I would assume that can’t be the case during FJ, so what happens if you answer “Roosevelt” to a question about Presidents?

Because the “Applause” light goes on.

You’re right, you can’t provide additional info in FJ, so “Roosevelt” would probably be ruled incorrect, but “Tubman” obviously wouldn’t.

Exactly; at least in the days when they had a studio audience (I don’t know if they’ve resumed that yet; the applause may be recorded these days). Not only is there an “Applause” sign that lights up, but there is a hype guy in the audience waving his arms around encouraging everyone to clap.

Same thing happens when a contestant gets the Daily Double right, or runs a category. It’s a game show, and they do all the things that game shows do to make things seem more exciting.

What @commasense said. She does it every time.

never mind.

I thought for sure when they came back from break, they were going to correct Megan for her “chomping” at the bit, rather than champing.

The two losing contestants tonight (6/20) both had $200 after Final Jeopardy. So how do the producers decide who finished in second place ($2000) and who came in third ($1000)?

Is it whoever had the most going into FJ?

Also, Megan pulls out some very lucky wins!
