Jeopardy discussion

I guessed the correct answer on this question. But then I don’t know of any other flavor of Goths.

There were also the Ostrogoths, who ended up largely in the Balkans.

Ostrogoths = Eastern Goths.
Visigoths = Western Goths.

Actually, I don’t think that Visi- actually derives from any word for “west,” but it makes a handy mnemonic.

Yeah, I saw that when I did a Google search on the Goths. I probably learned about both the Visigoths and Ostrogoths in my freshman History of Western Civ class, but that was over 50 years ago.

I know! I was hollering, “They gave you the initials!”

Well, the 6/16 Final Jeopardy “Debut Novels” was a disaster. I’ve never heard of it and apparently none of the contestants had either.

I was yelling exactly the same thing.

I got it! Outlander is a very popular series of books by Diana Gabaldan, and a wonderful series on Starz.

I guessed (incorrectly) Harry Turtledove’s The Guns of the South. It came out in the wrong year (1992) but I knew it had been published somewhere in the ballpark. I’ve read that book, but not Turtledove’s subsequent series about the American South winning the Civil War–it turns out that that series is not a continuation of TGOTS, but instead has a separate premise.

Anyway, mistakenly believing as I did that TGOTS had sequels, it did seem to roughly fit the Final Jeopardy information.

6/17 Final Jeopardy.

Sadie got rooked. She clearly wrote the correct answer, but somewhat messily.

The producers should bring her back.

Yes, she was ripped off. I clearly read harriet tubman.

Agreed, I could make it out, knowing what to look for. Was her bet big enough to win though?

My laugh for the game was Molly giving the answer for Itasca: no, not Niagara (?!!), it’s the Mississippi. Being from Minnesota of course Molly would know that. Her smile while answering was almost a smirk.

I’m thinking this is what happened: based on her two crossed out attempts, Sadie did not finish writing ‘Tubman’ in time. I think the judges saw that she was still writing when her time ran out. They turned the cameras off and asked her if she had finished, and she truthfully answered no. That would explain why Sadie was nodding her head when Mayim said she hadn’t finished in time.

So, while we could see what looked like ‘Tubman’ written down, the judges knew she didn’t get to ‘n.’

If it didn’t happen like this, the producers should invite her back.

Also, Megan clearly said “Lou GehriK’ - they should have ruled that an incorrect response.

God, Mayim is so annoying. What exactly is so funny about someone finding a Daily Double?

When is Ken coming back?

She’s feigning enthusiasm as best she can.

I think not until next season (fall). But there are rumors he’ll be the permanent host then.

They wouldn’t have to ask. The judges can see what is being written on the contestant’s screens, and the light pen becomes inactive when time expires. They could have seen, in real time, that she was still attempting to write when time ran out.

It’s close, but I didn’t see anything that looked like the final “n” in Sadie’s response. I think the fact that she seemed to accept the judgement indicates that she too knew that she hadn’t finished the word.

So, it’s assumed that her answer was “Harriet Tubma” ??? What bullshit.

I presume there is just a rule that you must finish whatever you wrote, to prevent you delaying until the last possible second.

This reminds me of a friend’s mother, who was convinced the yogurt chain TCBY stood for “Thank God It’s Yogurt.”

I don’t see it mentioned, but I think the award for Cringe-Worthiest Answer of the Year goes to the guy who mistook Michael Caine for Mick Jagger.
