Jeopardy discussion

Very early “Leave It To Beaver” openings featured writing in wet cement, but I knew that LITB ended way before 1969.

mmm

So there was a question today in the ‘Bye, George’ category:

‘A memorable 2018 photo showed this president’s flag-draped casket, with his service dog Sully beside it.’

The eventual champion guessed ‘Who is FDR?’ and then immediately realized that his answer didn’t fit the category.

The current champion then guessed ‘Who is Bush?’, and Mayim ruled it correct, saying “Yes, George H.W. Bush.” Even though Bush the younger is still alive, I would have thought that further clarification should have been called for.

The contestant who answered FDR was still laughing at himself when they went to commercial break; even Mayim had a smile on her face. He was surprised and giddy when he won; I’m happy that he won.

I felt the same way. “Bush” is a little too ambiguous without a qualifier of some kind. Either Bush’s full name or something like “The first President Bush” or “Bush Senior” would have worked for me.

I disagree completely. “Bush” alone was quite sufficient. Unless there is some reason the younger Bush would have taken to lying in a casket while still alive.

I disagree completely. Not everyone knows who is alive and who is dead at any given time (see: FDR in 2018) and one can’t assume the contestants know, so clarification was necessary.

Clarification should have been necessary. There’s no guarantee that a given contestant knows that GWB is still alive.

I tend to agree that “Bush” should have gotten a Be More Specific, as these things usually do.

People sometimes say, “But that’s the only one who fits the clue.” The thing is, the whole point of a trivia quiz is for you to identify which person fits the clue. Doing only part of that, and saying, “Well, it obviously wasn’t the other guy” feels like cheating. Or at least not fully answering the question.

I refer to them as “Bush the Elder” and “Bush the Younger.”

I wonder if the cards she is holding list the possible correct answers or if she’s reviewed in advance whether Bush alone would have been sufficient.

Buncha Jeopardy lawyers :grinning:

I refer to them as Bush the Elder and Bush the Lesses.

That’s NOT a typo.

I didn’t get to see FJ - ABC broke in with news that the Highland Park suspect had been arrested. They couldn’t have waited 5 more minutes, could they? I live near DC and watch the local affiliate - it’s not like the guy was captured near us. (Does that make me heartless??)

Palative, Palative, where do you roam?

When a clue overlaps your knowledge base they seem easy, when there is no overlap they seem difficult.

With that caveat I was still surprised at the To Kill A Mockingbird triple stumper. It helped that I saw a stage production last month.

It stumped me. I recognized the character name, just assigned him to the wrong book/movie*. Wrong is still wrong.

*Grapes of Wrath. I know, I know.,…

Hey, y’all. Anyone know where Jeopardy! is in Austin? KXAN now has a local newscast at 4:00pm. I’ve not seen it on the sister-station KNVA.

This website lists it as coming on at 3:30pm now (with 3:00 being a repeat).

Thanks! For some reason, I had trouble finding that information. I guess I’d be a poor Jeopardy! contestant.

In the category “agriculture”:

I got it, but was a little surprised that all three contestant did, too. Thought it might be more difficult than that.
